Angora Jess's Coat
Mike spent nearly 3 hours last night on Jess's coat. Jess as you know is an Angora bun and her coat is horrendously thick and very difficult to even clip it. It doesn't help that she get's fed up after awhile and restless as sometimes Mike has to carry on if he is half way through a big matt.
Last night he gently cut away at the top layer of her coat and I took photo's to show you how thick her coat is, Mike managed to get the whole top layer off by using the sharp scissors bit by bit but it's hard work and he ended up with bad back pain.
Angora Jess get's a trim every so many week's and these matts are not due to neglect but the way her coat is, the smaller matt in the photo was from under her neck and Mike is always checking under her neck as Matt's under their throat can strangle them and he took one off her neck at the end of November. Her feet and tummy are quite bad but she will not let Mike near her feet or tummy so he has to do a little bit at a time but we think she will end up having to go to the vet's and have to have sedation to do her tummy and legs.
I really hope that pet shops never ever sell this breed of rabbit again as they need specialist care and have to be looked after slightly different from the normal bunny. I feel sorry for Angora Jess but I am sure she feels a lot better for losing that top layer of thick coat and the matt under her neck.
This is the top layer of Angora Jess's coat
Top layer and above it small matt from under her throat.
This is the other side of the top layer and you can see how thick it is.
Jess after, she still needs more off but we let her settle for a couple of days and then do a bit more.
We know it's not a brilliant job but believe me it's very very difficult to get it 'neat'
her skin got slightly pulled under her neck but the matt had to come off and a bit of a sore
neck is better than being slowly strangled alive.

Jess was taken along with a load of other bunnies from a breeder by the RSPCA , she had 14 rabbit's in a small hutch so crammed together they couldn't move and there was no food or water, Jess was so matted her back legs were matted to her body so she couldn't walk she ended up at Tameside rabbit and guinea pig rescue in Manchester and she had to go to the vet's to be de-matted they couldn't get them all out they were so bad and we saw Jess up for rehoming and we took her on and it took Mike about 2 month's before he got the other matt off her it was so big

Re: Angora Jess's Coat
Sweet little fluff head! she must be miserable in the summer. I'll bet the birdies will be very happy to find all that soft bunny fur to line their nests with! Of course with the cost of angora fur, she may well support herself!

Re: Angora Jess's Coat
God she really is a big fluff ball isn't she!! I was expecting to see a rabbit with hardly any fur after those pictures, but she is still 10 times more fluffy then the average rabbit!! Lol! Poor girl, she must get so hot! I'm sure she understands you and mike are helping her!

We keep her coat short in Summer she is kept clipped out and we have air conditioning in the garage where she is with the other buns and we put her out in the garden late in the day when there are less flies and it's a lot cooler which is better for her

Re: Angora Jess's Coat
Oh, poor girl
Her story sounds very similar to Mr Mo's - I am sure he is Angora cross but he is nowhere near as fluffy as your girl.
She is very lucky to be with you and Mike
