Humpy Bun Empty Humpy Bun

Post by icedancer Fri Mar 15, 2013 9:55 pm

I've posted before about Florence humping Dougal if you stroke him, but she's getting worse. She's humping him so much, and he's getting fed up and running off, but she isn't getting the hint and just chases him.

Is there anything I can do to stop it? I don't want them falling out because they have such a strong bond, they were literally put together and haven't been apart since, and the only time Dougal snapped at her was when she was humping mad about this time last year.

I'm at my wits end, she ignores the spray bottle so I can't use that any more. I feel sorry for Dougal, he is missing out on his cuddles because he just gets pounced on.

I thought there was something you could add to their water to calm them down but I've maybe lost the plot Hmmm

Does this sound familiar to anyone??

Does she only do it when you make a fuss of him?

And it it only you, or when anyone makes a fuss of him?

I'd be inclined to try to find a distraction activity for her, something she enjoys but is only allowed to do while you make a fuss of Dougal. But it needs to be something he's not bothered about doing so he's not desperate to be doing that rather than being fussed Laughing I'd also introduce it at exactly the same time every evening, and get her used to doing it for a week or two when you are not stroking Dougal. Then once she is looking for that activity to occur at the time she knows it should be, let her at it while you stroke Dougal. If she stops what she is doing, stop stroking Dougal. If she goes back to it, start stroking Dougal again. She only gets to do the thing she wants to do if you get to stroke Dougal.

I have no idea if this would work, especially with Florence Wink but I'd give it a go.

Is it when you are just going to feed them Carla as rabbit's will hump with excitment when you take their food in or go to give them their food, a lot of our's and the boarders do it.

The only thing it could be is out of jealousy and she is humping him as if to say 'don't touch he's mine', she could see you as a rabbit I know it may sound stupid but they do see us sometimes as like them and they have hierarchy's.

In our house Mike is higher hierarchy to me to the rabbits. They would be like this in the wild, little groups with some bunnies important than others.

It's a bit difficult to explain but it's all part of what you learn in animal behaviour Smile

There isn't really a lot you can do about it.

I done a course in animal behaviour years ago, so I do understand a bit, but it's when anyone strokes him! Plus sometimes it's if you go towards the pen and don't even talk to them! She doesn't tend to do it at feeding time, which is weird, but other than that she's not fussy!!!

The hierarchy in this house goes: teddy, Dougal, me, Florence Laughing they both groom the teddy, Dougal only grooms the teddy, Florence grooms everyone. But she doesn't get jealous when Dougal is spending time with the teddy!

I'll give that a go Sparky Thumbs Up

Do I just have a strange rabbit?!

My Willow is a bit like this. I think it goes back to when she was an 'only-bun', (which Florence was at one point, I think?). Willow is so used to having all the attention, all of the time - especially with visitors! - that if anyone even tries to fuss Mojo she will charge down the room and be all "me, me, me!". She doesn't hump him because he normally runs off before she gets the chance Laughing

Luckily Mojo is not that sociable of a bun! I haven't found anything to stop Willow doing it yet. I gave up trying!!
