Riding Linton Yesterday
Mum took a video and some photos while I was riding Linton in the school yesterday. I always worry Im not riding very well and its so frustrating after the length of time Ive had out of the saddle. Its far from perfect, but it looks a lot better than it felt and its a big improvement from a few weeks ago. Its taking a while to get my strength back, it hurts my back when i canter sometimes, and its even worse in the school as hes so blimmin' strong! I know he looks a little on the skinny side, we're trying to build him up after all of the horses had selenium poisoning, but its so hard with the poor weather, as nothing is growing in the fields, and theres only so much hard feed we can give him before he turns into a nutter.

Re: Riding Linton Yesterday
I have watched it twice as I was watching you in the saddle and you ride really well , perfect in fact!
I would give anything to get back in the saddle but I don't think my back could cope now with it, I use to ride hackney stallions and they are something else as everything they do is faster. My own horse Roana I could just sit on her back and she would take me anywhere she was just wonderful. The best thing was when a few of us went down to the beach and had a good old gallop along the sand, sadly you can't do that nowadays but it was great especially cantering in the sea
* Oh happy days *

Aww thank you Maysie, and Sparky. I really used to enjoy jumping and cross country but Im thinking about having a go at dressage now, its a good starting point for everything really and when I gave Jerry up, I was just starting to take an interest in it.
I love hearing about Roana She sounds so lovely. I cant imagine riding a Hackney, I dont think I cant imagine riding a Fresian either - they're beautiful, but I dont think Id want to own one. Im really not enjoying riding as much as I used to, but Im sticking it out for the sake of a few months, because I know ill regret it otherwise, and I dont want to let Gemma down again.
Why cant most people ride along the beach these days? We regularly go between the Gare and Saltburn Pier, although I havent been for a few years, I think I need to get a bit stronger before I attempt it

Re: Riding Linton Yesterday
She was wonderful Roana
They stopped horses going on the beach in Blackpool due to them pooping on the sand which was laughable as the holiday makers use to leave more rubbish than anyone on the beach and they said it wasn't safe as people could get trampled.
Even the landau horses are not allowed to poop on the roads and there is a sort of a dung catcher at their rear ends that stops the poop going on to the roads. When I was younger and out riding my horse and she pooped on the road people use to rush out houses with shovels and scoop it up to put on their roses, some use to Thank me ( I hope they didn't think I'd done it )
First there was the nappy saga http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/2798158/Horses-forced-to-wear-nappies-on-Blackpool-seafront.html
and now they have the much better dung catchers

Ohhh, I see now. Oh Maysie, ive just laughed out loud reading that after a confrontation I had a few years ago on our local beach. The nappy thing really is laughable.
There was a dog walker that had a go at me because Bess let a load go on the path down to the beach. She asked me if I was going to pick it up, I smirked at her, until I realised she was being serious. I told her that i couldnt pick it up, and that its its not an issue, as its not dangerous to anyone, but it would do her garden the world of good if she wanted it. That didnt go down well She went on to tell us we should put nappies on our horses, and I didnt mean to, but I did have a snigger as I knew she was being deadly serious at this point. I tried to explain that they wouldnt tolerate it, then Bess started to loose her patience and back up and rear so we just had to go. .....At the time, I had no idea these were really being used, no wonder she thought we were so rude!!

Re: Riding Linton Yesterday
He is a bit of a handsome looking chap, isnt he? Hes looking a bit skinny at the moment though. All of the horses had selenium poisoning from the hay, some were affected more than others, one had to be pts and my old loan pony almost died too, so Linton has been quite lucky. Hes just not filling out very well as the grazing is so poor due to the naff weather weve had this year.fiver wrote:looks like your doing really well to me and what a gorgeous horse linton is x

Re: Riding Linton Yesterday
The fertilizer company was at fault. I had fed the rabbits hte same hay, but the vet said that it hasnt affected them because they process it and pass it though so quickly, whereas the horses will absorbed more from it. - Or something like that. It can take 2 years for levels to return to normal.fiver wrote:i'm sure he will pick up

He's lovely Sophia
I think you ride him really well - you were getting a lovely shape out of him and you could see him working really well from behind.
This makes me miss riding, but I just don't have time for it

Re: Riding Linton Yesterday
Thanks guys. Its been 2.5 years since Ive been in the saddle.
Fluffslave - Thanks, that means a lot I hate it when people think that just because their horse has their heads tucked right in that its going nice. Id rather see a horse carry his head like linton and work properly from behind. My old pony used to over bend something cronic, there was nothing you could do, as she would do it to snatch the bit from you and tank off She was a lovely mare, just ruined by young riders with harsh hands.

I totally agree. I was stewarding for a county level judge once (only at a local show), and she was showing me the difference in two cobs - one working well from behind and driving itself along, the other - yes, head tucked in - but not tracking up in the slightest. It really made me realise the difference.
