Heatstroke Empty Heatstroke

Post by KatieB Mon Jul 15, 2013 2:15 pm

So I think Annabelle had a touch of heatstroke last night.

I spent all day trying to cool their hutch and run and there was a constant supply of cool snacks and I kept wetting the sheet over their run and turning the fan on. They both have ice pods that they refused to lie on and frozed lemonade bottles they refuse to lay next to!

I fell asleep and when I woke up annie was just non responsive like a floppy doll and sooo hot

So I brought her in and we soothed her ears with a cold towell and syringe fed her water for a good two hours until she brightened up.

Pretty blimmin scary I can tell you especially with her heart being so fragile.

My plan today was to pop them in the back bedroom but despite having the window open and the blind closed was already 28 degrees in there at 8am so I decided against it.

Ive been home at lunchtime and syringe fed her some water so hopefully she will be okay.

I have ordered a pen that I can construct in the kitchen/diner tomorrow for them - Daisy can go in his pen in the living room which should hopefully help things. Hopefully it will arrive before lunch so i can get them inside and in it before the hottest part of the day.

Wish us luck!

Poor Annabelle!! My two wont go near icepods or frozen bottles either.

I think I'm going to get a marble tile this week, see if they take to that any better. Probably not Hmmm

I hope the pen comes quickly!

P@H sell something called a 'cooling mat'. I don't know what it is or how it works, but might that be worth a try?

Hope annabel feels better soon x

I remember one year Pud collapsed with heatstroke and I quickly soaked a towel in the bath and threw it over him, it was so scary but he was ok once the towel was over him and he was cooled down.

I hope she is coping ok today Hugs

Humum read about this method for buns who don't like being directly near something very cold:

Instead of simply putting a frozen bottle in for them, make a towel damp and wrap one end of it around the frozen bottle. Lay the rest out flat for them to lay on and the frozen bottle will help the damp towel remain cool. Apparently it works even better if the bit they lay on (or not Laughing) is on a tile or two.

Our Hu-parents got big plain white tiles from a local tile shop for about a pound each Thumbs Up

My lot have been going through loads of water, tried to put ice in the bottles to cool them longer but couldnt get it in, so just been changing water every hour or so. A lot cooler today.

They'd be far better off with water bowls as well in this weather Thumbs Up

She was brighter last night thank goodness bless her. It was not quite as hot here yesterday and I made sure she was syringe fed water at various intervals yesterday too.

Wish it would cool a little.

Poor Annie. Well done you though for acting quickly Smile
I worry so much about the bunnies in this heat, the only thing they seem to use is a cold/wet towel.

It's awful here today Sad

It's so muggy and HOT at the same time. I am definitely not moving my bunnies outdoors until this heatwave passes. They currently have the coolest room in the house which I'm much happier leaving them in whilst I'm out during the day.

We have had them inside since yesterday - I got a death glare from Charlie this morning who was less than chuffed but it was just to hot outside for them.

It's a drama though - daisy has to go in a pen in the living room and the other two have their pen set up in the dining room. Daisy has taken to peeing on the living room rug in protest!
