U/D Herbie very ill, lost him. Empty U/D Herbie very ill, lost him.

Post by Sixer Thu Feb 13, 2014 11:35 pm

Herbie was not bouncing around for his teatime treat so I brought him in and metacamed him and gave him some tummy meds. He did this a couple of weekends ago and picked up staright away after the metacam. However by suppertime he was no better and Hollie was out of sorts too. I have given them both some meds and tried to syringe feed them which they objected to, Hollie in particular. They both have had a hop around the hall and don't seem in obvious pain. Could last night's wind have affected them 24 hours later and slowed their tummies down. Or is it pesky teeth again.

If they are not back to normal in the morning off to the vets we go. Overnight recovery vibes needed!

Hollie is fine, I rushed Herbie to the vets very early on as he had not improved. Vet has just phoned, he has a potential blockage and starting with bloat. His teeth are not so good and he has arthritis in his spine so PTS was mentioned. As he still enjoys life they are trying for him but it doesn't look good.

It must be his 7th birthday any day now. Herbie is my daughter's rabbit really, she is beside herself. As am I  Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

The vet has just phoned, she said she had never seen anything like what had happened with Herbie. One minute he was fairly OK and the next his stomach suddenly expanded and he regurgitated some fluid. They have operated on him, there was no blockage in his stomach but alongside food there was a large amount of this fluid of which the vet has no idea where it has come from.

Herbie is awake now, it took a long time. He is a long way from being out of the woods so any spare vibes would be welcome.

Well it is almost unheard of for rabbits to regurgitate anything. Is it worth you vet contacting one of the specialists for advice?

I will ask this when I speak to them again. I hope I have done the right thing by Herbie, I am not sure I have. It is less than two months since his last dental, he has arthritis in his spine and he absolutely loathes being syringe fed. He still loves life which is why I agreed to treat him but I fear the surgery will have been too much for him. I think I was thinking with my heart and not my head  Sad Sad Sad

You can only make decisions based on what the bun tells you at the time, if he has been bright and full of life before suddenly becoming ill I think I would have been inclined to give him a chance too. I hope he pulls through  Hugs Hugs Hugs

THe vets have let Herbie go. His heart stopped but despite resuscitating him it was clear that he was very very ill. We agreed that it wasn't in his best interests to keep him alive.

Louise and I are heartbroken. Binky free forever our fluffy wee man xx
