Hector keeps digging in his litter tray- help!
Once a week without fail he digs in his tray and sprays litter, poo, and hay everywhere, including all over my carpet. At first I thought it was because I hadn't given him fresh hay on that particular morning, but he had fresh hay this morning and he's still done it. I can't tell him off for it because he does it during the day when I'm at work.
What can I do to stop this because it's getting very tiresome now!! I'm thinking about getting a cardboard box and some shredded paper and seeing if he'll dig in that instead

Re: Hector keeps digging in his litter tray- help!
we found that it was a combination of the type of litter and the litter tray being too soiled which made one of out buns dig all the litter out of it. We changed the litter we used [we were using megazorb changed to wood pellets] and that pretty much solved it.

It was cleaned out last night so I know it's not because it's too soiled, he has paper pellets in there.Amelia66 wrote:we found that it was a combination of the type of litter and the litter tray being too soiled which made one of out buns dig all the litter out of it. Bear in mind that digging is a natural behaviour. The digging box may be an option or getting a hooded litter tray or one with a rim to reduce spillage.

Myrtle will dig at her litter if there is too much or too little in the tray, it has to just right!
At first we though it was because there was a picture of Helen Mirren on the newspaper lining her tray but she also dug at it when it was David Beckham or George Osbourne.
She occasionally has a box, which she loves, but if mess is an issue then a box seems to cause more as there is also shredded cardboard to deal with.
Myrtle seems to dig more when she moults so maybe it is something like that?
I have used mats before for Patch to dig (search for "chill and chew mat") he loves to dig and chew them...not so much chilling going on though!

Personally I would try changing the litter to see if it makes a difference. Molly digs in megazorb but not once has she done it with Back 2 Nature.
Worth a try IMO

Ergh, I know how frustrating this can be
Willow is a b****r for this if I've not lined the litter tray with newspaper and put hay straight on top of the litter. She will also dig up Mr Mo's, and he normally just sits there looking absolutely mortified at her behaviour

Re: Hector keeps digging in his litter tray- help!
Holly is a little digger too hun, but I put it down to nest building. We have tried boxes and all sorts for her to dig in but so far nothing has worked. Her favourite is on the cover which we have put on the sofa or on my bed at night, she even digs on me sometimes. It is natural behaviour; I just wish I could find something that would fulfill her. She doesn't however dig in her litter tray.
I hope you can sort this out hun.

Silly question,
Jo you say she digs on you Why? Yes I understand it is a natural behaviour, but what is the purpose. To dig soil or litter ok but on humums? Is it part of claiming something or someone?

I think it must be love, she is claiming me; she doesn't do it with Paul. It is exactly what Binky did before he was neutered but Holly is a girl, so I am flummoxed.

I think it's just one of those rabbity things 'digging'.
Some of our's are diggers and I've a few boarders that like nothing better than spreading the contents of their litter tray all over the floor ....every day!

I made him a little digging box, i put shredded paper in it then put some treats in it and he loved it. Need to get him a bigger box though

We alter the content of the digging box. Shredded paper , soil!!! Sand, ....
Always a hit but soil is Bubbles favourite, full stop.
