Water Bottles Going Green
Its driving me mad, they are cleaned, which is an ordeal in itself and within 5 days they are going green again. It is driving me bananas. Anyone got any tips?
Re: Water Bottles Going Green
Yeah... use bowls....
Seriously, I couldnt stand the green bottles as it appeared as quick as I could get rid of it... so I use bowls now and they are easier to clean and dont seem to go horrible as much.

You've probably missed a little bit in the bottle spout or something, which is why it's coming back so quickly. I've heard of people leaving theirs to soak in Milton to clean them, might be worth a try?

Re: Water Bottles Going Green
As soon as they go green i throw them away.
This hasn't happened in ages since i vigerously shake and clean the bottle everyday.

Mine seem to go green more in the summer months, i clean them with a bottle brush once a week in the summer and far less in the winter for some reason - maybe the heat makes a difference?

Algae needs sunlight - more sun (well, daylight) in summer = more algae. You could try covering your bottles with material (e.g. slip a sock over it) to block out the light

Re: Water Bottles Going Green
I use Milton and I have several bottles so I just change them every few days and soak them between uses.
The only one of my bunnies who has a bowl is Juno and I find it more annoying than water bottles in terms of personal convenience.... I'm sure the buns prefer bowls.

Re: Water Bottles Going Green
BOttle covers can sometimes help as the algae need light, I have used a little tiny piece of chain rattled around in the bottle (The kind you get attached to plugs works well) to help clean every last bit.
If not mine will drink out o a bowl no problems Charl. Brian will even drink out of a cup if he wants water!

Re: Water Bottles Going Green
you can put rice in it aswell and shake like a mad beast to get rid of the algae. Don't put Rachel/Rice in though, I don't think she'd be best pleased!!

Re: Water Bottles Going Green
and you'd need a bloody great water bottle to fit her through the neck! No offense Rice, I'm not calling you fat or anything
Re: Water Bottles Going Green
Remember not to use hot water for the rice method, otherwise it gets all sticky!

I've got one of those bottles with a little duck in. That very rarely goes green, and if it does, it's only the duck that goes.

Re: Water Bottles Going Green
I have covers on mine, have had no green stuff at all.
Plus they are insulated ones for the winter so no frozen water!
Mine also have a bowl which is more of a nuisance for me but they prefer them to bottles anyday!

Me likes the novelty factor. Evo uses a bowl, but I like to have a bottle there too just in case he drinks all his water or spills it while I'm out. I wonder if it stays not green because it doesn't get much sunlight??? It's the only bottle I've found that doesn't drip.

Re: Water Bottles Going Green
Mine will use a bowl or a bottle. I usually give them a bottle as I hate cleaning the bowl out so often They always manage to kick poor or hay or something into it. Charming bunsters
Re: Water Bottles Going Green
I use rice to wash my bottles out, then soak them in Milton (including the spouts). Definitely the best method I've found.

Re: Water Bottles Going Green
I was about to ask this same question as Albert's bottle seems to go green every other week! He's in a room that gets a lot of light though, so I bet that's what it is.
I'm off to buy some milton....

Half an hour for the Milton, then rinse well.
