Effie might have Coccidia and/or Megacolon
It feels like one thing after another at the moment. I just want to have 2 happy, healthy bunnies again.
Effie has had excess caecotrophs ever since I got her. Her sister back at the rescue has the same problem, they are crossed with English buns. It gradually got worse, until I stripped their diet right back to hay, pellets, and now just parsley. She produces some huge, sometimes tarry cecals, and egg shaped fecal pellets.
Shes being tested for coccidia tomorrow, but we think it may be Megacolon, if not both
Not only that, but after Dolly came back from the vets with fleas last month, Effie had 2 ticks on her ears today I dont know what the issue with parasites is all about!! Ive never had a problem, theyre clean bunnies too. A few people have said that they can hide in hay through winter, but we also have a LOT of wildies in the garden at the moment. I think they may be under their shed too.
I know it doesnt seem like a lot, especially as shes generally well in herself, but im finding it really hard. I only lost Dolly last month, Effie still doesnt feel like she belongs to me, and I hate the thought of her potentially having something like MC. Ive spoken to Richard Saunders, an RWAF vet nurse and two very well known rescue workes, and they all agree. Richard did mention dental issues/pain, but I dont think this is the issue. She eats tons of hay, and runs around like a loony.

Re: Effie might have Coccidia and/or Megacolon
Sorry, it came up with no new posts all afternoon and evening. I thought it was a bit odd, so went on the hunt!!
The parasites were not ticks (I thought they looked small!), I had just never seen fleas feeding before. She has actual rabbit fleas. They went under the microscope at work. We dont know if Dolly had rabbit fleas or cat fleas, I didnt Indorex the shed either, I just hoovered, washed everything and disinfected it. We dont know if this infestation is because I didnt break their life cycle in the shed, or the wildies are bringing them in. Either way, I need to get on top of it before the wildies around here start getting myxi.
Coccidia test has been sent off today, have to wait for results. If I dont have them tomorrow, i should have them by Monday afternoon. Still going to treat for it, until we get the results. Just need to get my hands on some Baycox without paying the £6o+ for a full litre of the stuff!!

Re: Effie might have Coccidia and/or Megacolon
Goodness, rabbit fleas. I am sure you will get on top of them now you know what you are dealing with. I bought a house riddled with dog fleas so I know how you feel.
What pellets do you feed. I had massive problems with Barney and excess caecals. They only stopped after I swapped Excel pellets and SS for Bunny Basics. The common denominator in the SS and Excel was that they were alfalfa based whereas the Bunny Basics are timothy hay. Rightly or wrongly I blamed the alfalfa being too rich.
I hope that things get easier for you very soon xx

Re: Effie might have Coccidia and/or Megacolon
I hope you're easily able to get on top of both Effie's tummy trouble and the fleas.
I was going to suggest, like Sixer, that maybe it's the pellets. I know Willow never agreed with Burgess pellets...
