Myxomatosis Vaccination Frequency

Just running this poll out of interest as both my veterinary practices have recently switched to recommending 6 monthly vaccinations.
Do your vets recommend boosters every 6 or 12 months?

My vets at the end of September were recommending 12 monthly. Artie was about 10 months since his previous vaccination but I've decided to have them done 6 monthly regardless of the the 12 monthly advice, having read about Polo and Oscar's recovery. I'd never really thought about the implications for the time between the 6 and 12 months before.

Our vet used to recommend annual till I told them (tongue in cheek might I add) that I was disgusted with them and they should know better, and the fact that the fleas etc aren't getting killed off so much by the cold weather and cos of central heating in houses and such, they now advise 6 monthly

Mine recommend six monthly for myxi and annually for VHD

I also have been advised by my vets that Myxi is every six months and at £20 per bun I need to save every penny if I want to keep Bob as well. £120 a year ouch....

Why does your bun commute?

My vets say either, I go for 6 monthly to be safe.

Mine recommended 12 monthly until about a year ago, when they sent out a letter saying that they were now recommending 6 monthly. I always had Evo done twice a year anyway.

My previous vets recommended 6 months as we are in a high risk area. Flip side to that was that they didn't give the jab correctly After a particularly unprofessional incident, we moved to another vet who is far more bunny savvy, gives the jabs correctly, but was surprised to see Bertie 6 months later. He said he was the only bun on their books who has 6 month jabs, and it was 'probably' not necessary.
last year was paricularly bad here, this year has been a lot better, but I'm sticking to 6 months, even though these vets are clearly not recommending it.

Around Notts was bad last year, someone I know lost 6 of her 7 buns, half were vaccinated
Haven't heard of it being as bad this year but I'm sticking with every 6 months, the vet nurse commented the vets was like my second home
My monsters cost me £240 in vaccs a year

mine are 6 monthly -last year was awful - myxi buns squashed on roads everywhere and i picked up quite a few on sides of roads to take to vets to be pts. This year is loads better but you can never be too careful in my opinion.

Fudge and I often get the train down to my parents in Nottingham and so Fudge travels in his carrybox lapping up the attention of small people on the train! We do the journey 2-3times a year and normally Grandpa (my dad) drives us back up at the end of the trip!

My 3 are done twice a year without fail... Id hate myself if they caught anything which could of been prevented.

It looks like it has become much more widespread in this last year for rabbits to be done bi-annually then.

If I remember rightly, most vet practices were advised to tell their clients that bi-annual myxo jabs were recommended. Now, I can't remember who the advice came from, whether it was the vet board, the RWAF, or the vaccine manufacturers. If it was the vaccine manufacturers, a lot of the vets probably thought it was just a 'promotion' type thing to sell more vaccines Our vet told us about it, she'd had notification last year. I'm sure it was something to do with the amount of cases in buns which had been vaccinated but went on to develop the disease.

I was a bit disgusted with my vets as I was the only one to vote 12 monthly on here

Tinks and Rudy are coming up to six months since last vaccination so I rang to ask what they currently recommend and they have said SIX monthly.

Great, trust may again be restored (a bit!)

Like I said, it's on really due to the high incidents of Myxomatosis over the last couple of years that most vets have really sat up and taken notice of change to the vaccines administration.

Mine go every 6 months, Mishy had hers today but Liam can't have his just yet, not until he is better.

I was asking my vet about this the other day. She said it should be 6 monthly but if you really can't afford to do that then annually (obviusly) but time it for March so the rabbit is covered for the summer as the disease is seasonal.

She then went on to say she had recently been successful in getting the practice manager to drop the price of the myxi vac on the basis that is what will stop pepole getting it done 6 monthly. Think she managed to shave about £10 off them so they about £20 something each which was good. They are trying to get all their buns to be due for vaccination in March so it is more likely all of them will be covered all summer. It's nice to see small animal specialist vets making the effort to change things for the greater good of all their buns on the books.

We had a newspaper article prompted by the vets last year because there was an outbreak in our area and about 10 rabbits came into the practice with myxi. Luckily, mine were up-to-date with theirs.
