Re: Septrin
Yes it is a POM, you will need to either purchase it from your vets or ask for a prescription which can be filled at another vets or online with a suitably qualified website.
The vet will have to see the rabbit in question first before they prescribe it and as with most Antibiotics it's off-licence for rabbits so they will have to 1. Usually have tried Baytril first and 2. inform you of this verbally or by asking you to sign a consent form.

Re: Septrin
She's already on it (prescribed by a vet of course ) but we have wasted 4 x 5ml doses as the stubborn bun refused to take it. I wanted to see if we could get it cheaper elsewhere to finish the correct amount of days. Will see if I can phone the vet and just get the prescription rather than the consultation.
Re: Septrin
You should be able to get a repeat prescription without another consultation easily if you explain what happened. There is a Septrin which comes as granuals which have to mixed with water, it taste's of orange and the buns seem to love it!
Re: Septrin
Will ask about that one then - she is on the banana flavoured liquid at the moment and she refuses it really well!
That's why she was on baytril injections previously. Even the vets struggle to look in her mouth, although they managed long enough to see that there were no dental spurs.
The vet did mention that there was an injectable version but I don't want to inject her anymore than necessary due to the scabs she already has. Also the vet didn't want to prescribe injectable without trying the oral first.
Does injectable septrin cause a scab/reaction?

Re: Septrin
I have to say I don't know, Lexie is the first of mine to have gone onto an injectable abx, the others have all been oral.
Re: Septrin
I have used Trimicare which is an injectable form of Septrin. TBH it was worse than Baytril for causing a local reaction at the site of innoculation..............

Re: Septrin
I'm not sure again now as the snotty nose had almost gone as she was eating the septrin mixed with banana, but now she won't touch it whatever we put it in. Since we have been syringing feeding it she has become snotty again, it stresses her and seem counter productive.
Re: Septrin
What else have you tried disguising the Septrin in? Smetimes it's actually less stressful for both parties to just syringe it in orally than try and get them to eat it.
Re: Septrin
Mashed banana worked for the first 6 days which was amazing, she has never had oral doses before. Then she decided she wasn't going to eat it like that anymore and we tried
on bread - she ate around it
on bread with fresh banana on top - she ate banana only
on bread with diabetic jam - ate jam and around the septrim
on bread with herbs and fresh grass cut up into it - avoided altogether
soaked into pellets - wouldn't eat at all
The problem is that her dose is 5ml which is a lot to hide. Once she detects it she won't eat it at all. But we love her!

Re: Septrin
It is a pain that so many mls are often needed to get the correct dose. Imagin medicating a Conti with Septrin
I have Eddie ( Standard Rex ) on it at the mo' but I have resorted to the injectable form as its less stressful for both of us. Just have to hope he is not one to get a nasty skin reaction..........

Re: Septrin
I can imagine it's a bit of a nightmare! I had to use 0.6 ml for a guinea pig.

Re: Septrin
That is the conti dose! She only weighs just under 6kg where she has lost so much weight.
The vet said it is quite a weak solution as it is a child's medicine. It's a pity they don't make a stronger version of the same medication. I will see about the orange flavour though - if we can get another 6 days in her before she refuses it again we'll be OK.
I don't think I want to do the injections just yet - she still has about 5 scabs from the baytril. but they don't seem to bother her so maybe it is the best way?
