Mack's abcess: Post-Operative. *contains graphic imagery*
Here are a couple I got of the cavity after the abcesses had been excised, these pictures really don't allow you to appeciate just how deep and wide it is inside....I can easily get half a cotton bud in there when swabbing it out.
It's a lot cleaner now, this was taken during the first swab & flush when it was still too sore to clean thoroughly....so there is a lot of dried blood and discharge on his jaw. He has one stitch top & bottom.
It's a nightmare to clean because it really hurts him and Phil finds it difficult to help as it makes him retch .

Thats right, only the major part of the abcess was located on the right (as you see it) and it runs further under the skin on this side than on the left. The cavity also tracks back towards his throat a fair way. It was easier to make an entry point in the soft flesh of his jaw than to work over the bone.
Mack heals very quickly so sadly we had to leave a very large access hole to allow cleaning, flushing and draining without the cavity healing from the outside in....it absolutely must heal from the inside out.

Oh that looks so nasty. It's such a good thing that you can steel yourself to clean it. Poor Mack. I hope it heals up well for him and he doesn't have to go through anything like this again. You are a very brave and committed person Sooz. I really admire you for this.

Mack is a saint!
He's very much had his patience tested tonight I can assure you, he was in such obvious pain & stress by the time we finished tonight that I had a lump in my throat and just had to sit cuddling him and stroking him to try and calm him down. The hibiscrub is also causing his fur to matt and moult away and he won't tolerate me trying to brush it out.
I'm taking him to the vets tomorrow to see if we can increase his pain relief and I am finding it very distressing to watch him experiencing discomfort, even though he is already on a split dose of Metacam.

Poor poor thing. It is just heartbreaking having to hurt them (Ginge had infected balls yesterday and I had to squeeze out a HUGE amount of pus. It broke my heart ot od it bless him)
I really hope the vet can give him some pain relief poor chap

Spent 2 hours waiting at the drop in surgery this afternoon, as there were 3 PTS taking place, which for obvious reasons cannot be rushed.
Mack is having a lot of skin reaction and we suspect the Hibiscrub is the cause so he is on saline only flushes until Wednesday to see if it subsides. I have also been allowed to double his Metacam doseage and to administer a Vetergesic injection when required to alleviate some of his discomfort.

It's such a good thing that you are so skilled with the meds and all the other stuff. I wouldn't know where to begin.
Hope he starts to make a big recovery for all your sakes as it must be so upsetting to see him this unwell - and for him too obviously.

I wouldn't say particularly skilled, the poor lad probably feels like a pin cushion at the moment! What I didn't realise until yesterday is that the vets only took this course of treatment because they trusted my commitment to the cleaning regime, apparently they would have been reluctant to allow many other clients to have a rabbit with an enormous open wound at home for cleaning.
It is a nice feeling to know your vets trust you.

There is no way that the average punter could do what you are doing. It must be horrific to have to hurt him and poking cottonbuds into such a sore area is grim. Well done you for having the stomach and commitment to be able to approach it. When Mack pulls through it will be as much your hard work as the vet's.
