Photos from my Berlin trip - A lot of pictures
Soviet War Memorial - the soldier's face is like Dean Martin, honest!
Brandenberg Gate complete with border guards. You could get your passport stamped with various original visa stamps, but I wasn't brave enough in case passport control made me buy another passport.
This is one for Jay and Charlotte - this is the hotel where Michael J dangled his baby son.
Checkpoint Charlie
Charlottenburg Castle
This is where the ladies at the castle took tea in the afternoon whilst out walking.
This bit of cake was the size of a small country! It was lush.
This scary Lindt bunny was enormous and with its ears forward, it looked like it was about to leap on anyone in front of it.
This was an exhibition of little bits of the wall. There is a short part still in situ, but all the rest has been demolished.
Memorial to European victims of the Holocaust. This is a really strange installation, although it is very interactive. The ground slopes down and as you walk towards the middle, the columns become really tall and you are lost amongst them. A very claustrophobic experience and full of meaning.
The spiral walkway up the inside of the dome of the Reichstag.
Entrance to the dome with the exhibition about the history of the Reichstag

oh my god those pictures are amazing! I am really intrigued by the memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. I can see how that would be incredibly suffocating. How appropriate. I have never seen or heard of that installation before. Why were you worried about getting your passport stamped? The place looks amazing.

What utterly fantastic pictures Nickie. And can I just say OMG - that is where Blanket was dangled from the window!!!! And also, look at the size of that Lindt bunneh!!!!:luv: :luv: :luv:
Re: Photos from my Berlin trip - A lot of pictures
I took that photo just for you and Jay.
The Lindt bunny looked so sinister. There was a display just in front of it and a lady was browsing and it honestly looked like it was going to go for her cos its ears were forward.
I was anxious about getting my passport stamped with fake stamps in case UK Passport Authority were a bunch of meanies and made me buy a new one. It was gutting because they were free and had ones for the day the wall came down, Checkpoint Charlie, and a GDR Visa stamp.
Mind you, having come back through Heathrow the same week as those 12 guys were rounded up, the security did feel pretty heavy. I've never had my photo taken at the airport before.

OMG the photo's are great I went to Berlin when the wall was still up and it looks so different now. I loved it did you see the two blue churches called Lipstick and Powder Puff named due to how they looked. Brings back lots of good memories and that cake yummers was it an Apfel Kuchen (apple Cake)? (mouth Drools)

As to the churches, I probably did see them but didn't realise that they had nicknames. There were a lot of churches just across from the Humboldt University but we didn't go into the square.
It is indeed Apfel Kuchen and I can testify to how yummy it was! We also had cake from KaDeWe which was glorious. I had Kirchkuchen which was basically Black Forest Gateau :luv: My friend had a slab of chocolate lushness and when we went back the next day, they didn't have any of it left so we felt very cheated!! Someone's cake always looks nicer!
I daresay, Checkpoint Charlie and the Plaza in front of the Brandenburg Gate looked very different. All the buildings in the pictures were built after the wall came down because the area where I was standing was in the middle of the 'death zone'. There is a line of cobbles that charts where the wall used to stand and it brings the hairs up on your neck to think about all the people who were trapped.

I spent 7 lovely years living in Germany and the cakes are to die for. As well as the food in general. I may one day return to Berlin just to see the transformation it has gone through. I am glad you enjoyed your visit there.

Wow, photos are fab Nickie. The Holocaust memorial is intriguing - I've never heard of it. And that was one very large piece of cake!
Glad you had a nice time.
