Mindy has been to the Vets Today
We have just got back from the vets with Mindy. She has been breathing really fast lately and I got a bit worried so phoned and got her booked in for a checkup this evening. Her temperature was 105 and her heart rate was about 240. He thought it was related to the heat but gave her a baytril injection just in case. He suggested putting her in a basin with some cold water for about half an hour . Don't think she would stay in for 3 seconds, never mind 30 minutes. Also spray her with cold water, which I had already done anyway. She is now sitting in front of a fan and I have left a bottle of water, which has been in freezer beside her. Do you think I should force her to sit in water?
She has to go back tomorrow for another check.

Re: Mindy has been to the Vets Today
Oh poor Mindy This happened to Bertie this time last year. A really good quick cool down is to get a flannel, and immerse it in some cold water, squeeze off the excess and put it around her ears. This cools the blood travelling back into her body. If you have a bag of frozen peas/beans, put a tea towel over them and put Mindy on top of that, on your knee. She'll only stay until she's cooled down. The fan is alaways a good idea, I've had one going in Bertie's room the last couple of days, he started showing signs of heat stress on Monday.
Noseys to lovely Mindy, hope it goes OK tomorrow xx

Re: Mindy has been to the Vets Today
I have a friend whose fluffy bunny (appropriately called Fluffy ) had to go to the vets as well and had a raised temperature. She had stopped eating, although she ran like a whippet when I caught her for Nyree. She had the usual jabs for stasis, then came hope and tore into a dandelion that I offered her! She has been back to the vets yesterday and today and hopefully it was just the heat.
I will pass on the excellent tips to her, although hopefully it seems to have cooled off up here.

Thanks Jay, I wrapped an ice pack in a sheet and sat her on that but she did'nt stay on it for long. I am now going to put the cold flannel round her. Thanks again. x

Oh dear poor Mindy hope she feels better tomorrow x
Perhaps go to a local DIY store for some tiles that you can cool off for her to lay on but the frozen water bottles are always good x x

Re: Mindy has been to the Vets Today
The cold flannel across the ears is definately very effective (most heat is lost through the ears as the veins are close to the skin) and much less stressful than trying to get them to sit in cold water.
Bun's are far more prone to Hyperthermia than Hypothermia as they are unable to sweat in order to self-regulate their temperature so it is important to try and control their environment directly on hot days to ensure they are able to keep sufficiently cool.

underground is cool, so i suppose that's where they'd normally be and the heat must be quite alien to them.
Any news on Mindy today Jo ?
that's a really good suggestion, someone advised me to do that last year and I got Bertie a marble tile, 12" squ, and he lays on that, it's really effective cos there's no way it absorbs heatFudgesMummy wrote:Perhaps go to a local DIY store for some tiles that you can cool off for her to lay on but the frozen water bottles are always good

Re: Mindy has been to the Vets Today
Thanks everyone. The cold flannel definately seemed to work Jay and she is much better today. It is also a lot cooler, so that has been a big help. I will get a couple of tiles for her too, brilliant suggestion Kelly. She sometimes sits on the fireplace which is limestone, but her favourite place is in the dining room so it would be best to have a couple in there for her. She has found a dark corner in the garage and is in there just now, it has a concrete floor, so that should keep her cool. Her breathing has calmed down significantly, hopefully she is back to normal.
Fudge! Mindy said she would love to share a frozen bottle with you.

Re: Mindy has been to the Vets Today
Glad to hear Mindy has cooled down a bit Jo
I hate it when it's really hot, I worry so much for Rosie. Good tips on this thread though. Although when I put a frozen water bottle in with Rosie earlier in the week, she shoved it away in disgust, so she can't have been that hot!

Re: Mindy has been to the Vets Today
Mindy had her second visit to the vet this evening and I am pleased to say that her temperature and heart rate have dropped. They still registered a bit high, but I think most of that was down to her being stressed out by the 20 minute walk to the vet. She had more baytril but the vet seems to be quite happy that she is on the mend and she does not need to go back unless there are any more problems. Since she got home she has been bounding around and has been tucking in to some veg.
After the vet had listened to her heart, he put the stetascope down on the table next to Mindy. Well she turned round like a shot and was poised to bite a chunk out of it. Luckily I reacted quickly too and managed to get it out of the way before any damage was done. Phew, that could have been embarrassing.
Anyway thanks again everyone for all you support and advice, I don't know what I would do without you. You are all brilliant.
