Toys!!! Empty Toys!!!

Post by ElleyMay Wed Jun 24, 2009 9:30 pm

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to pick your brains about bunny toys!

I feel like I've tried everything and yet Brynn has not seemed to embrace this whole toy concept. I'm assuming a large part of this is that she is still very young. She hasn't even started chewing on things (which has been nice in terms of my furniture)... she has lots of bunny chew sticks, all varying in sizes, textures and colours but they get very little use. She sort of trys things out and then decides they are boring about 15 seconds later. ALL of the bunny toys I have purchased for her have been pitiful (figures Rolling Eyes). Some of the homemade toys have been a bit more successful, but nothing has really been a hit. I checked out some of the older posts on toys and gone to every website for toy suggestions, but I've tried most to no avail. I liked this web site which talked about rabbit personalities and how different rabbits will like different things http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-6/chew-stick.html . It seems like the only thing my bun wants to do is act like a cat. Sometimes Brynn will dig at her blanket and in boxes so I'm thinking she could benefit from some sort of digging toy (suggestions?) Basically, I'd really just love any unusual suggestions about creations (or random objects) that your rabbits have taken to.

Also, I just wanted to point out that I pride myself on creativity and on "thinking like a rabbit" (the boyfriend thought I was crazy when I first threw that out there Laughing) yet, I can't seem to crack this rabbit. I made her a gigantic rabbit tunnel system with boxes, it started with about 3 small boxes and ended with about 25 boxes of varying shapes and sizes and a few rooms being taken over Very Happy. She didn't seem to mind it but she didn't love it. Actually my cat seemed to be more interested in climbing thorough it and jumping around it (Typical! Rolling Eyes)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

My buns are not big on toys either. The only thing they really like is their tunnel and that is basically that! I have stuffed toilet roll tubes with hay and treats and they just look at them.

Maybe some buns just don't play as much as others. However, they are all very curious and if I do anything in their area, they are over inspecting and sniffing.

Glad to hear my bun is not the only one! Wink

Does anyone know if it is okay to give a rabbit a box full of sand? Again, this could be a sad attempt at entertainment but I think she might like it! The cat's litter is in a storage room that Brynn can't get to (Luckily Tori, the cat, let's us know when she needs to use it). When we forget to close the door it is the FIRST place Brynn heads to. I've caught her a couple times in the room, and she is always in the litter box digging around in it. Gross, and unhealthy, but still kind of hilarious I must admit! Laughing

hmm i think the sand question came up before and i think it was a no no but soil is ok or shredded paper or wood based litter - maybe someone will be along soon who remembers the sand for digging thread? rabbits are hard to crack toy wise - mine love carrot patches and willow balls and cardboard boxes but others they ignore and i don't know why!

They do all seem to differ on this one. Bertie will not touch anything that is labelled as a bunny toy. Initially, I spent money on these things, but learnt quite quickly that it was wasted Rolling Eyes

I tend to make things for him. Her loves chewing hemp string, so I tie bits of string to carboard tubes, willow balls and sticks, and he picks them up and chucks them around.

He loves his cardboard tunnel (Carpet inner tube) but like yours has never been big on box-houses. He has a couple of knitted dolls that he runs round with as well.

I buy untreated straw waste bins from Matalan, and he'll spend 2-3 months destroying those.

But by far the best toy he's got is his treat-ball. I just put 4 of 5 pellets in, close the hole over a bit and then he'll easily spend 1/2 an hour chasing it round, great execrcise, and keeps him stimulated.
You can see him with it Here, this may work for Brynn, as there's food involved Laughing

Mine like their tunnel.
kitchen roll tubes/small boxes filled with hay.willow balls i save these for rainy days.
they tend to pick up toys in hutch and toss them when they are in their way.same with football they will knock it out of their way.but thats about it.
i also seem to think that sand was a no no
I've got a large container that i fill with bark or soil for them to dig in
Easy to clean up afterwards just sweep

Mine both love carpet, but especially Piper Rolling Eyes So to save my actual carpet I got some carpet scraps that she can dig and chew at. She likes the resistance that the actual carpet has so I put something heavy on one side of the carpet scrap so she can pull and yank at it without it moving.

Piper also really enjoys shredding phonebooks. They make quite a mess but she loves it! Very Happy

T'was I who raised the sand question before & whilst we didn't reach a definitive no for sand we came to he general conclusion there were far better digging things such as sawdust and shredded paper. General consensus seemed to be sand might irritate the buns' little eyes etc.
Mine doesn't really go for toys either, he takes great offence to everything we put in his domain and he just throws it around until he manages to throw it down his stairs into his run. (He even does this with food bowls when he's feeling particularly grumpy - only made the mistake of buying him a nice ceramic one once!! Rolling Eyes )

Then if he's really put out by it he won't go into his run until the offending item is removed!

Tibbs is pretty fussy about toys as well - she won't touch anything that's plastic for example, but she loves willow balls and straw/grass mats and will happily spend hours shredding either. Truffles just used to like anything he could destroy - he was particularly fond of the straw carrots/corn things that he could pick up and chuck around.

I recently discovered that Tibbs could be kept entertained for hours with an apple - I used to slice them up for her, but if I leave it whole she'll use it as a football for the rest of the afternoon and eat it slowly!

Aww my lot must not be the norm as they all love playing!

Speckle loves throwing things. Anything and everything. She sometimes throws her food bowl to me when its dinner time!

Clover (my grumpy lady) loves rolling this wooden ball I have for her. I honestly can't remember the name of it, but she spends ages rolling it under herself with her front paws. She looks bizzare whilst doing it.

Zack and Bertie love jumping on their foot stools and boxes and charging through tubes. I got one of those carrot patch toys and Zack destroyed it. Boys huh Rolling Eyes
