adding salt to water bottles
Iv just got my new book from amazon today - rabbit lopeadia
Iv just read that adding a pinch of salt to waer bottles will stop them freezing over in the winter.
does this work? and is it safe to do?

I would have thought that salt would make the bunny de-hydrated! Im not an expert but that sounds a bit odd to me.......I might we wrong though. Also have you ever tried drinking salt water yourself.......surefire way of making you throw up.....hmmmmmm

Re: adding salt to water bottles
We use a few drops (and only a few drops) of olive oil. Seems to work down to about -8 (Sooty and Sweep live outside and are rather bemused by the snow!)

I heard lemon juice stops them freezing too however bunnies shouldn't have citrus.

Definitely wouldn't use salt. A tiny amount to you might be a lot for a wee bunny's system. Like the olive oil suggestion.

Re: adding salt to water bottles
Wrap the bottles in bubble wrap and cover them with a old, thick woollen sock. Mine have been fine since I have done this, even the spouts have been OK.
