Carpet Chewing
Hi All, I'm new to the forum and i'm sure this question has been asked a million times but, is there anything you can do to stop the carpet getting chewed to shreds?
Cheers :o)

Re: Carpet Chewing
Hey hun, the only thing I can really suggest is to try providing lots of chew toys. Untreated wicker toys seemt to be the way forward. How old is Tuffers? Younger bunnies are often more likely to chew.....
Re: Carpet Chewing
I found with my 2 nethies (who were terrible carpet chewers before their neuter) If I sprayed a solution of white wine vinegar, lemon juice and water on the spot that they were chewing, it stopped them straight away
But as Catwhiskas has said make sure you supply lots of alternatives to the carpet. If he/she isn't neutered then this will help with all sorts of behaviour.

Re: Carpet Chewing
Is Tuffers chewing the carpet at the edges of the room, in particular the corners.....if so then people often buy cheap carpet tiles and pop them in these places so the tiles get damaged and not your carpet!
You can also try teaching her the leave command, Jay is probably the best person to talk to about that. If you check out our YouTube site (on the forum Navbar) Jay has done some videos on bunny proofing you will find helpful.

Hi Tuffers, I'd advise you watch the videos for a start, they're full of really good ideas for protecting you carpet and home from Bunny destruction - Click here Also, there's been a lot of questions on here re: housebunny behaviour recently, check through the forum, you'll find other threads dealing with similar things.
I use upturned wall tiles in the corners, but as suggested, carpet tiles work too. House buns can learn what is ok and what isn't. When Tuffers is going for something he shouldn't, say, in a firm voice 'Tuffers...Leave' and clap your hands loudly, once or twice. They don't like loud noises, so he'll stop in his tracks. He'll probably try again, so do it again, and show him something else to do, like chew a willow stick, that kinda thing

Re: Carpet Chewing
Hi Catwhiskas, Bernie, Sooz and Jay. Many thanks for your replies. Tuffers is 6 months old and she seems to chew any where on the carpet. Ive bought some anti-chew spray which works for a while but then wears off. I'll try the white wine vinegar though. Ive also bought her some of the willow sticks and few other chew toys, which have helped a bit. I'll also try raising my voice a bit when telling her off and clapping my hands.
I'll keep you posted, Thanks again

sorry, Tuffers is a she You post images by clicking on the image icon (left of the weblink one) and insert the URL of your photo. Most of use photobucket or similar to host pics, then put in the web adddress of the photo
You'll probably have another 6 months of the 'terrible teens' (yes, buns have them too ) then she'll most likely calm down a bit Has she been spayed or are you intending to get it done?

Re: Carpet Chewing
It is common practice and recommended for pet rabbits, esp. girls, but it's your call.

Re: Carpet Chewing
I have the same problem with my two. I give them a firm NO, and supply them with a alternative chew object. I also keep lots of chew toys around the house. We have a loo roll on each step on the stairs, lol.
They are starting to get the idea.

Re: Carpet Chewing
Tuffers is at that age too, 6 months is the recommended age for a spey and is when the hormones well and truly kick in. She may be less destructive after but she will be a nicer, happier pet and hopefully healthier too.
