bunny veg shortage - what to do?
I dunno if this is nationwide or not, but I've not been able to get hold of any spring greens or kale for the past 2 weeks
I did get one bag of kale from one s/market, but it was, for want of a better word, gopping, yellowing and in tiny bits, and his highness wouldn't touch it The two greengrocers I use have both said that the supplies are low cos of the weather.
Greens and Kale are pretty much staples for Bertie, so at the mo he's having lots of herbs, a bit of broccoli stem, and a small nugget of carrot. I'm wary of cabbage, is it right that the dark green cabbages are Ok in small amounts? Ta

I'm struggling with greens too and had to buy organic kale as there was no normal stuff in at Tesco's.
Ours have savoy cabbage but only in small amounts. I have steered clear of other types of cabbage.

Re: bunny veg shortage - what to do?
I've had the same problem and am certainly spending more as am buying kale in tiny prepacked bags and I have found some shredded spring greens, again in little bags - which are expensive. I've been giving broccoli too. Mine don't really like any sort of cabbage, although George does pick at it, while looking up at me in disgust.
I'm going to try and grow my own carrots this year so they can have the tops - they love those. I tried last year but nothing sprouted at all Maybe this year I will be more successful!

Re: bunny veg shortage - what to do?
The kale harvest was rubbish this year round here - too many warm days and freezing nights. Plus it's suddenly become popular for people to eat again (we're even thinking of turning a couple of our fields back to it, and we haven't grown it in 40 years) so there's a definite shortage. It shouldn't last too much longer as the next crop will be ready in a few weeks, but again, it'll run out quickly.
If you've got a local greengrocer they will often put aside the outer leaves of savoy cabbage, cauliflower, kale etc and you can get them cheap.

Re: bunny veg shortage - what to do?
Some veg (spring greens?) are not in season so we're having to buy them pre-packed made especially which is costing the earth! I find that spring/summer brings the best veg for rabbits as there are so many veg rabbits can't/shouldn't eat that grow in the Winter (potatoes, onions, leeks etc.)
We're planning on growing a rabbit garden this year, with flowers, herbs and veg that bunnies love. We started last year but unfortunately the soil wasn't ready and not much grew except herbs and tomatoes. The soil is much better prepared to handle plantnig this year. We hope!
I think Cabbage is ok but like Spinach, in small quantities as it can give the bunny bloat. Although advice differs greatly I find.

Yup having the same problem and my lot won't touch cabbage as an alternative.
Re: bunny veg shortage - what to do?
I'm really shocked as I've managed to get spring greens right through this winter, there's normally a few weeks of them being hit and miss and we've had to get kale, if it's available, but in this bad winter we've never run out of spring greens.... in fact for the last two weeks the greens from Tesco have been really good quality, very dark green leaves, yum yum. I did however notice today they were 98p up from about 68p Worth it though as they are really good at the moment.

I couldn't get spring greens this week and my three had savoy instead. They also got some red cabbage and loved it. I tend to be more cautious about savoy or sweetheart.

Re: bunny veg shortage - what to do?
Crikey I hope this don't go on too much longer. I can't go to Tesco's, and I don't normally do supermarkets, I did look in waitrose, and found more skanky kale, so didn't get that. I'm giving him lots of grass, and some dried leaves from last year, hers etc, and he's eating more hay. I've upped the pellets from 6-10 too
Re: bunny veg shortage - what to do?
Mine really like the Savoy cabbage. Havent noticed whether or not theres a shortage round here, I only get spring greens when I go to the supermaket - otherwise they have some salad or something from the fridge. Im a bit funny about kale so rarely buy that, heard it can give gassy tums. X

Re: bunny veg shortage - what to do?
Mine also get cabbage more than greens or kale as we get it free from work (the big dark leaves from the outside) and then I supplement it with carrot, celery, cucumber, brocolli, cauliflower and lettuce.
Re: bunny veg shortage - what to do?
no shortage here, but some vegs are very expensive and rather small.
I always look for things half price but am not always lucky.
Sometimes I can buy a big bag of somewhat bruised apples for very little money.
