babie rabbits
hi all..
im new to this site also new to owning a new baby rabbit.
just wondered if someone could help me as i have only had my rabbit 2wks and yest morning i found she had had babies in the night!
i checked under the fur and there is 5 babies which are warm but moving about alot and making noises,is this because i moved the fur???
also today i was cleaning the mucky parts of the cage and i found half a baby (bottom and legs) and a lumpy bloody bit covered in hay and saw dust.. what do you think happened do you think it was mum? would she do it to the others?
ive had to bring them all inside as she had the babies in the run part of the cage and with all the rain it is quite damp. will they be ok?
sorry i know loads of questions was just a big big shock to see she had, had babies!
any help and advice would be great!
thanks

Re: babie rabbits
Hi Natasha and welcome to HH
Your situation is not uncommon, and is a shock.. I've not had this myself, but moving or touching the babies is generally not a good idea because the mums can sometimes harm them, which may have happened in this case.
It's generally the best thing to leave the mum to it.
Another new member had a similar situation a few days ago, this thread may help you, ( click here) and please ask for more help if you need it. Mum will only feed the babies for a short time each day, so don't be concerned if is seems like she's ignoring them.
How old is the mum? Sometimes the first litter can be traumatic for a young bun mum, so best to keep an eye on her.
Keep us posted and keep asking, but generally, leave it to mum

Re: babie rabbits
Hi Natasha,
What a shock for you and probably for your bunny. As Jay has said, check out the other thread as the person had the same concerns as you. You are best to leave the babies, but if you do have to touch them at all, ie. if you see them outside the nest, give the mum a good pat so you get her scent onto your hands before your touch the babies. If she smells your scent she may abandon them or hurt them.
Good luck with your litter.

hi all
thank you for your replys...
i have not actualy touched the babies just moved abit of the fur on top to have a look, i found the half babie near to the nest under the sawdust while i was cleaning out the mucky bits of hay and sawdust, on the first day of realising she had had babies i only fort there was 4 but the next day i realised she had 5 then this half bit.
i was told when brought the rabbit she was only few months old but after reading up on them she must be atleast 6months to have babies?
i have not checked them today as i think moving mum inside yest was abit of a shock for her, but i was told to do this?
could you tell me if its ok to handle mum still? i dont want to stress her anymore than need to.
again thanks for all your help.

Re: babie rabbits
I think you should probably leave mum and babies alone as much as possible, and don't take mum away from the babies.
This must be such a shock. Do you have a rabbit savy vet near you that you could call for some advice? Also make sure you check out that link that Jay suggested.
Pet stores frequently get the age, breed, and gender of rabbits wrong . Unfortunately, your scenario is also not completely uncommon. 6 months is usually around the time that they come into sexual maturity but it can definitely happen sooner. Also, younger does can have a harder time with being a mum so make sure you keep a close eye on her.
Goodluck! Others on here are super knowledgeable so keep asking any questions you have!
