Shadow isn't eating his cecotropes Empty Shadow isn't eating his cecotropes

Post by AprilGirl Thu May 20, 2010 9:18 am

Hiya,
Hope someone can help me.
On Tuesday while I was doing Shadows check over I decided to cut his nails and ended up somehow cutting one too short and cutting his quick, obviously he bled so took him down the vet to sort it. He was really stressed going there on top of his bleeding claw Sad while we were there I got them to check the folds of skin around his "bits" as it was a little scabby and smelly, apparently it's normal and just needed cleaning which they did for me. He was really stressed and breathing quick. Got home put him in his run and he hid in the grass my poor boy.
Anyway, he's been eating ok (his pellets, salads at night, hay and grass) moving around ok, he had a free range in the garden last night before he went into his hutch but over the last 2 mornings there has been a couple of cecotropes on the floor of his hutch, he never leaves them. I'm worried I've either stressed him out too much or there is something else wrong, he's quite big at the moment but nothing much as changed with that over the last 2 days.
Help please

sometimes too many pellets can stop them eating them

or perhaps being cleaned round his bottom etc has just put him off....

i dare say someone experienced will be around to answer your worries...

Emma, as far as I know, it can be a sign of either too much greenery in the diet - from veges, or grass - too much protein- high protein pellets- or an upset tummy.

You could try Shadow on less veg, and get some probiotics in his diet. If that doesn't help, then it may be something else. You can get Pro b's from P@H or your vet.
Keep us updated and vibes for you both Hugs

Thank you Jay.
He's been outside more this week so having more grass, so that could make sense. I'll cut down his salad tonight and maybe less pellets too. He always has fresh hay constantly so won't starve.
Will take a trip to P@H tomorrow and get him some probiotics.
He's fine in his self and he's not stopped eating!
Oh and Jay sorry I haven't replied to your message about the microchipping video, I'm not very good with technology so have to get hubby to sort it for me and he's been very busy. I promise I will get round to it asap!

I always found with excess special poops it was usually down to too many pelletts and I had big probs with Bobby on excel, as soon as I changed to SS she was fine. also Carlo leaves them after he has been to the vets after his myxi apprantly they can be put off by the taste after a jab Shocked

as someone said above also now that he has been cleaned down there he may have just been put off a bit. May taste different now clean, and needs to get used to it

How is he in every other way?? Okay?

My old man doesn't always eat his caecatrophs..... but I think that is just cos he is lazy. I think the advice you have been given it fantastic. See how he goes. x

That means your buns are probably eating theirs all up!

Rabbits have a two-part digestive process. They eat food and it comes out as a ceacotroph. They usually make them in the evening and sometimes they are called night pellets. They look like miniature bunches of grapes with a slimy coating. (making them sound really attractive aren't I Razz ) The food isn't totally digested at this point and the bun eats the pellet directly from its bum. You might see your bun doing this and not realise what it is doing.

The pellets then go through their system again and eventually come out as the round pellets which are discarded. All the goodness has now been taken out.
