Recurrent tooth problem UD It's sorted!
My wee stray Felix has yet again got teeth problems.
He has a baby incisor that should have come out but hasn't and will not stop growing. It interferes with his eating by growing slightly sideways. He has had the tooth removed twice. The first time the vet said that they couldn't get the root bud and the second time, they managed to get a bit of it and hoped it had been killed.
Yesterday, I noticed him taking a little more care than usual and the tooth is growing again. I have no problem with taking him to have it removed, but I think it is such a shame for him - and a risk - to be having GAs so often.
Is there anything that my vets could try that a specialist would recommend? I am sure they would be happy to take advice if it were offered.
I don't know how old Felix is but suspect he is 3 or 4. He doesn't eat hay and not much grass and has a leaky eye. He has had his back teeth checked and they are fine. It is just his rogue incisor that is the problem.
Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

I was hoping that some of our veterinary friends might stumble on this one and have some professional advice. My vet is a lovely guy but he isn't a specialist and I just wondered if there was anything else that could be done.

Ermm they have 4 incisors, 2 upper and 2 lower, has he got more than that or are you talking about his peg teeth?

I wouldn't know Nickie, but your vet will be able to request help/info from a specialist - Anna Meredith at Edinburgh will probably be the best bet - and she may then ask to see him as a referral if nec.

I've got a feeling it's actually a peg tooth, in which case they usually do not cause any problems, but they can malloclude just like any other tooth.
They are notoriously hard to remove permenantly and when Mackenzie's kept growing back I was given permission to clip it at home, as provided they are in good condition the chance of them shattering is lower than an actual incisors.

It might be the peg tooth. It grows from behind his incisor but it gets in the way of his eating by growing sort of sideways. He is going to the vet on Monday, so will have a word with them about clipping it. Although my stomach does lurch a bit at the thought.

Took Felix to the vets today and rather than just leaving him to have the tooth taken out under GA, the vet asked to have a look as they had tried removing it twice and they weren't happy about another GA either.
Turns out that it is a peg tooth that has gone craaaazy. The vet simply clipped the tooth and showed me how to do it. I've ordered the tool for doing it and will make an appointment with the Vet Nurses when he needs done again so I have some support for the first couple of times.
So relieved that he doesn't have to have a GA every few months ........ and it will save me a fortune.

That's great, I think if it's grown back twice then your unlikely to succeed on the third attempt anyway. It's a piece of cake once you've had a couple of goes at it.
Re: Recurrent tooth problem UD It's sorted!
He does seem a lot happier tonight. I thought he would hate me for the rest of the day, but when I went out with a few pellets he positively grabbed them.
It would be lovely if you could just explain to them that it was for their own good and they could just go, 'yeah, OK, that's cool'
I was surprised how little force was needed to clip the tooth. The instrument has really long handles and obviously the fulcrum must be really good.
