Need advice - Sarcoptic Mange Empty Need advice - Sarcoptic Mange

Post by animalcrazy Fri Jul 09, 2010 5:13 pm

The outer part of Sasha's ears are a little crusty and I believe that this is the doing of Sarcoptic Mange.. After reading about this problem I came to know that injectible ivermectin is the answer to this problem... I will be taking Sasha to the vet on Monday but since most of the vets here know squat about treating rabbits I would like to know how much ivermectin should be injected and for how many days?

Also is there any alternate treatment in case the vet is not confident enough to use injectible ivermectin?

I cannot go to the vet sooner since I am down with the flu and I dont want Sasha to catch it from me..

Any help is appreciated.. Thanks!

I have been using Himalaya Scavon spray on stray dogs that have mites/mange and the spray really works.. This spray prevents the animal from scratching, cures the problem and keeps flies away from the infected animal.. I plan to get a bottle tomorrow and try it out till Monday, hopefully I wont need to go to the vet...

I prefer using natural medications due to the problem of incompetent vets.. If anyone has suggestions then please let me know.. Thanks!

Hiya, I don't know the dose for ivermectin, mine has only had it once, for mites, and it was one injection. I remember that we were told he could have another jab (I think) 2 weeks later if the mites didn't clear up, but they did.

Can't think of a natural treatment, sorry.

Good luck, and let us know how she gets on Thumbs Up

A vet came home to vaccinate my dogs today.. He had a look at Sasha and gave her an injection and prescribed some medications for 3 weeks.. I wasnt at home at that time so I am not aware of what injection he gave Sasha.. Sasha has loose motions since 3 days also so she is not feeling too good, she just sleeps all the time...

The vet scared my parents by stating that mange is very contagious and my dogs should not be allowed near Sasha.. Now my mum insists that we cover Sasha's cage with a large cloth at all times.. I also had to hear a lot about getting infected animals home after the vet left... Mad

My wee Felix went to the vets today for a dental examination but also for an outbreak of mites. He received a 0.12ml injection of Panomec. I'll let you know how he gets on with the jab but so far he's been absolutely fine. He has to go back for a second jab in a fortnight's time.

I checked up on the internet about it and it is used in dogs for mange.

I hope Felix recovers.. I think that Panomec is the brand name for ivermectin...

I am at my wits ends, I recovered from flu yesterday and today I realized that I have contracted Mange from Sasha.. I will be heading to the skin doctor tomorrow to get some medications..

Oh poor you. Hope you manage to get some sleep. It must be so hot over in India. Last thing you need is to be itchy too.

Oh no, scabies is nasty, I got it from a sheep when I was little.

Do you have Aloe Vera growing wild in India? If so, grab an Aloe Vera stalk, split it and put the juice/gel on your skin, it's very good for healing Scabies. clicky and was what my folks used on me. If not, can you get the AV gel to buy?

Don't let Sasha come into contact with it though, it's poisonous to buns.

Hope it goes soon.

The vet gave her an injection and prescribed 3 sets of drops.. The drops for lose motions have to be given twice a day, the vitamin drops have to be given once a day and the drops for mange has to be given once in 3 days..

I am giving her homeopathic medicine for diarrhea, as of today her tummy is a lot better...

I will be giving her a bath and hosing down the cage after all this is over.. Sasha requires a bath badly, she has soiled herself all over due to the diarrhea, I wipe her thrice a day but it doesnt seem to be enough..

Ok, Aloe Vera is considered a toxic plant to buns, but it's the jiuce that causes the most problems.
Marinell Harriman's House Rabbit handbook - which is considered a very good book on bunny care lists AV as a Class three toxicity - " Low risk plants, due to low level of toxins, or toxins that herbivores such as rabbits, routinely handle better than non-herbivore species. This class also contains plants that have historically been considered toxic, but recently whose toxicity is being reevaluated as non toxic or low toxicity. "

Medirabbit, another respected site, says that the juices are toxic, however the House Rabbit Soc. webiste (USA) doesn't list Aloe Vera as toxic - Confused? Me too.

So, it's your call really. I'm not qualified to advise you on this, but a bun under stress from illness is less likely to handle anything well that upsets its digestion. Personally I wouldn't risk it, but it's your decision to make with your vet.
Another option may be this - there is a cream available here called 'Sudocrem' that is an antiseptic healing cream, used for nappy rash, sunburn, excema etc. and is safe to use on rabbits - usually for sore hocks, and post op scars. You can get it delivered to India from this website.

Healing vibes for you and Sasha, I think we all know how worrying times like these are.

Thanks for replying..I shall refrain from applying Aloe vera juice on Sasha, I dont want to trouble her in any way.. I am already applying an ointment for mange, it is an ayurvedic ointment used for skin problems like ringworm, mange and eczema in animals.

I called the vet today and asked him which injection he used but as always this vet doesnt like disclosing his secrets... The last time he had used a nebulizer on an ill rabbit and he refused to tell me which solution he had used..
