Fly/blue bottle Empty Fly/blue bottle

Post by Thumper2001 Sun Jul 03, 2011 2:06 pm

So a buzzing fly just flew into my kitchen, where the bunny is just now with the French doors open!

I started flapping about worrying, but she's a smart bunny, jumped in her tent where it couldn't get her Smile

They are horrible things and even though Snuffie is an indoor bun, we always check him for flies. I don't normally kill anything, bugs included, but I make an exception for flies.

I also don't like to kill things, but when it comes to my bunny... Then I'll do it if I have to!

Me too, and Rory had a mucky butt today, I have had to get Yasi to squidge him under her arm so I could get to his bot bot properly - those testicles **** straight back up when I had to cut a knot from a delicate area! Poor little sausage! I may look into 'rear guarding' them even though I check them daily, it only takes a matter of hrs doesnt it - very scarey!

I am totally fly paranoid too! Especially because it's getting harder and harder to keep her clean the older she gets.

I'm sure she's weeing in her sleep Sad

I know they can still get her inside, but I'm so glad I can keep her in. Lessen the risk a but I guess.

Rear guard is maybe the way forward!

also a tip we use is putting mosquito nets over the window [on the inside so you can still open and close the window with it on, just needs to be a little baggy and taped all the way around]

Obviously if they roam all over the house this may not be practical but good for a few rooms to keep the majority out and still let air in.

I have one of those brilliant long spider catchers that you can get spiders and bugs safely and put them outside and I try not to kill anything but flies I will, besides getting my own back for every rabbit that has suffered death due to them, they are just a disgusting insect and like Thumpers Mum I am quite paranoid when it comes to flies and if one get's in the house it's all systems go till we catch and kill it.
In this weather that we are having at the moment there are more flies and I don't know if anyone else has noticed but there are some very big bluebottles about Sad

There are some HUGE bluebottles! And that god awful noise they make! Yuk!

Though, I guess we should be glad of the noise, least we know when they are there!

Mosquito nets sound like a brill idea. She does get the run of the house but only when we are around, and can therefore chase any flies away, but I could put one over the window in her bedroom! Smile

That is a great idea love, nets up at the windows. All our babies are indoors so are always swatting flies at this time of year.

I dont worry as much as I should, I expect its because my buns are outside so I cant really stop the flies completely. Plus my buns have never had mucky bums so it just doesnt worry me, i should keep a closer eye out for them really.

With boarders I am always checking, but never with my own!

Oh I wish! It's been a long time since I never had to worry about Thumpers bum, and the older she gets, the worse it gets!

I hate, and she hates, the regular bum baths, but it's just got to be done Sad

I dont understand why people get in a flap over a fly. I know they cause flystrike, but if your setup and litter trays are clean and your bunny is fit and healthy, is there really anything to worry about? I know the risk is always there, but surely you can live your life worrying about the odd fly that finds its way into your house? Hmmm

I used to panic, just because everyone else does. Id rather have the window open and let the air circulate for the bunnies on these hot days. Surely if you take reasonable precautions, it shouldnt be a problem? Smile

ETA: The only time i really get in a flap is when im in the playhouse and a fly gets in, i have fly nets over the internal mesh door, so if one gets in, it will be lucky to get out again. Shocked

Snuffles has a regular botty bath too love, being eight and a half, he can be very smelly and I am realy afraid of is the urine burning him. The vet said it was all right to do this and I think he quite likes it. Maybe it is soothing.

Yes, flies are something to be very concerned about, they don't just go for mucky bottoms, flies can detect cancer in rabbits and will target them, sadly because that's how nature works Crying or Very sad

Thank you Snowy, I didn't know about flies being aware of cancer in a bun and thus make them targets, you learn something new everyday. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
