What do you do when you just run out?
Most of you know that I have never been away from the vets lately. Last May I lost Dylan and was left with a £300 vet bill. Not long ago I lost cookie also another vet bill. Recently Taffie cost me easily £360, then peanut an £50. Last night I was a little worried with indie being quiet and a little bit wet at the nose (clear) the vet and I are very suspicious that there is something spreading through them but after all this I just cant afford to get them tested. Indie is fine this morning but Peanut is reluctant to get up inless forced and doesnt want to wake up much. I hate to admit but it wouldnt be a surprise if she passed away in the next 24hours. You know I fight for them and I get annoyed at people that dont bother getting the money for vets fees but what happens when you spend a fortune, get no where and just cant afford anymore?
Re: What do you do when you just run out?
I would be looking for extra expert advice - are you a rwaf member? If so you can ask your vet to contact Richard Saunders for advice. If not would your vet be able to contact the Royal **** vets? or other expert centres? I know Sparky's huparents have sought advice for their brood, maybe they could give you some advice around this.

It has made me laugh that the forum has starred that out!

Re: What do you do when you just run out?
I know it does it all the time. I dont see that contacting the **** vet would help its not that the vet I have cant help cause she can but I simply cant afford much more in such a short time. The **** vet would probably cost twice as much to see them.
Re: What do you do when you just run out?
I wasn't suggesting you see them rather that your vet consults them. As a RWAF member your vet would be able to consult Richard Saunders who has a wider area of rabbit knowledge than most vets. Sometimes it is a case of checking for something unusual or trying a different treatment combination. The treatment maybe quite cheap if you can pinpoint the cause.

Re: What do you do when you just run out?
might be worth it, not a member of RWAF. Need to speak to the vet again
Re: What do you do when you just run out?
We have spent loads over the past few months on our buns at the vet's and it is a worry and that's why we do boarding to help with the vet bills but we are so quiet at the moment and what we have taken this month in boarding alone so far it doesn't cover one vet bill. It's a big problem.

Re: What do you do when you just run out?
I just dont want to give up on them because of funds. Charities wont help because I do my best to work and not receive benefits. I only work 4 days a week on minimum under 21 wage. I wouldnt have them if I couldnt afford vets at all but you never expect them to get poorly this close together. I want to see if the vet will give me some more baytril and see if I can sort indie a bit and buy myself some time to find some money and test them but would need to be all 4 as they live together. Grrrr!

I guess it would be really quiet with no one going anywhere this time if year. Jan Feb are terrible.
Re: What do you do when you just run out?
We've had the same - a spate of poorly bunnies (we lost three last year ) pretty much wiped out any money the Huparents had stashed away. We've been quite lucky that Humum has a permanent full-time skilled job and Hudad always manages to pick up another contract, so the money has always been there just when they have needed it.
If they ran out and needed to pay vet bills, stuff would be going on eBay
Our vet has also been fabulous and we have no doubt she would help us with a payment plan if needed. She's occasionally waived consultation fees, and sold us drugs at cost. We love her
Indie - what symptoms have your rabbits had? We've had a really nasty strain of Pasteurella and finally found a drug which seems to have (fingers crossed) cured it. It's a farm drug and, relatively speaking, cheap. (Neither Baytril nor Flagyl touched the infection.) The downside is it has to be given by injection every three days, but my Humum soon got the hang of doing it at home...

Ah, also - we have little faith in nasal swab tests. They came back inconclusive with Rocky (who later died ), and even a post-mortem done on Molly only showed Pasteurella and failed to identify a strain.

Beg. Steal. Borrow. Ok, maybe not the steal part
I'm so sorry to hear you are in this position
Could you ask for an advance on your pay? All they can say is no?
Do you have any friends or family that could help see you through this rough patch?
Like Sparky suggested, could a payment plan be drawn up with the vet?
I really hope you can get the funds together

Re: What do you do when you just run out?
Oh sweetie, if only I had the money.
My vet let's us pay a little at a time but I realise it is unusual. You could try asking, you never know. Up until 6 months ago, we had a £500 bill and they were very good about it.
Hugs
Jo xx

Re: What do you do when you just run out?
I am afraid peanut went massively down hill, I hoped she would pass in her sleep last night but she didnt I had to ask my mum to take her to the vets and have her pts today. She was so bad she just lay in a towel in the front seat. Angry, upset, frustrated as you can imagine.
Re: What do you do when you just run out?
Oh Indie, I am so sorry
You couldn't have done more for her - you gave her every chance and fought so hard. I'm so sorry this was the outcome

Re: What do you do when you just run out?
She isnt the one that had the feed tube etc taffie is doing well but scared they will get ill again now. Peanut didnt want to fight and I couldnt have put her through any of that, they are all so individual. She could still drink, toilet and move but balance was gone she didnt get up for 36 hours straight and would stay in any position you put her in so definately the brain.
Re: What do you do when you just run out?
hate not being with them. When I have a furry I always stay with them till the end, obv you cant stay with the rabbits but I couldnt even cuddle her to take her down.
