It was my son's School Prom last night. Here he is with two of his friends. Pals since Primary 1. Awwww (Christopher is the one in the middle).

Ah bless... I hope you embarrassed him horribly
How do you know which tartan to wear - is there not a whole heirarchy / etiquette thing related to that? Or do you just pick one you like?

Re: School Prom 2012
Awww Its lovely to see them in kilts, its not something you see a lot of being in England. We had a scottish boy in our class, but he wouldnt wear a kilt for prom because everyone else was wearing suits. They look lovely and smart though I hope he had a fab time, i loved prom night.
...is it really tradition to go without grundies under them though? My grandad is scottish and says it is, but what if there was a big gust of wind?

Re: School Prom 2012
Sparky, you are supposed to wear the tartan which is aligned to your clan. There are lots of books with lots of surnames and which clans' tartan you can wear - or you just choose (a) the one that the hire shop has and (b) the one which is the prettiest! Christopher's was a borrowed kilt so I haven't a scooby which tartan he wore. A kilt outfit is a common 21st birthday present up here.
As for what a Scotsman wears under his kilt - the answer is nothing! As for a gust of wind, kilts are very heavy and are made from yards and yards of heavy woollen material. They wouldn't blow up easily and sometimes the hems are weighted.

I don't think I'll go to Scotland. I might not like the view from bunny eye-level

They look so handsome in their kilts. I think the Prince Charlie jackets always look so smart but the laced shirts look romantic I think.

Re: School Prom 2012
Luckily Chris didn't do the 'no pants' bit - especially as there is a fabulous photo of him sat on the steps of the hotel giving a lovely view right up the Khyber Pass! Obviously my little talk about how to sit when wearing a kilt went straight over his head!

Re: School Prom 2012
Cheryl, he's wearing tartan trews, so was safe.
There were a few doing the 'true Scotsman' thing and very hairy bums they had too!

Re: School Prom 2012
I am not sure I see the point of tartan trews - a bit of a half hearted option. I had just realised that he was wearing trews when you posted. At the very least your son could have had some matching pants so it was less obvious!
Did he come home hideously drunk?

He was not too bad. He came home at 2.00 am after going on to a party. I had gone to bed so didn't hear him come in. He was fine the next day and was up and out of the house by 10.00. I saw some of his pals working the next day, so I think they were all pretty sensible - surprisingly!

Re: School Prom 2012
You've made hudad look up his family tartan.....
He's a bit peeved because the Irish tartan's aren't family specific but by place.

Aye and they always have saffron in them. My dad wanted to wear a saffron kilt for my wedding, but he couldn't hire one out of Ireland.

I was Jo. I thought they all looked so lovely and smart and it is funny, but they suddenly looked very grown-up. Such a nice way to end your school days.
