Molly's whiskers ? U/D 17/11
Molly's whiskers are a third of the length they used to be. They are white so it's really obvious that they're shorter than they used to be.
Junior's are fine.
What on earth could have happened to them?! Could Junior be nibbling them off?

Re: Molly's whiskers ? U/D 17/11
I know!! It's a complete mystery.
If Junior has nibbled them off, it's her own fault as she doesn't half give him a hard time

I think Humum has noticed this on a bun too but she can't remember who - she wasn't sure if they were being nibbled or if it could happen as part of a moult. Maysie will probably know

He's not brave enough to take revenge on her while she's awake, he probably chews them off when she's asleep.fiver wrote:can't imagin he would have would he?

Not that she sleeps often!
Thanks Sparky. At least I know now that it's not unheard ofSparky wrote:I think Humum has noticed this on a bun too but she can't remember who - she wasn't sure if they were being nibbled or if it could happen as part of a moult. Maysie will probably know

Re: Molly's whiskers ? U/D 17/11
Sometimes one rabbit will nibble the whiskers off another rabbit to show they are boss it's another dominance thing. It happens in the wild with wild rabbits and I have seen wild rabbits with missing whiskers.
There are little sences on the follicle ends of the whiskers and this tells the rabbit how wide something is like a hole, if the hole is whisker wide he knows he will get down it , I know there are people who trim rabbit whiskers but we never have

Re: Molly's whiskers ? U/D 17/11
How odd! I'm going to go have a look at my two's whiskers.
So in theory, if a rabbit has shorter whiskers and the hole is small and therefore a whisker wide, it could get stuck?

The whiskers of a rabbit should extend the width of their body and their whiskers tell them if a space like a hole is wide enough for them to get through

Thanks Maysie
I thought the exact same thingKatieb wrote:Why would anyone trim a rabbits whiskers?
I can totally see why you would think that but unfortunately that's not it They used to be really long but now they're only about an inch, and only on one sideVelvet.Tears wrote:Maybe she has just grown so they look shorter?

Re: Molly's whiskers ? U/D 17/11
Could Molly have gotten stuck at some point and the whiskers broke off instead of being pulled out? She's so active.

I know it's been months since I started this thread but thought I'd update anyway....
I've just caught Junior nibbling her whiskers
And she was just lying there letting him

Re: Molly's whiskers ? U/D 17/11
at least you now know the reason for the shortened whiskers,
junior
maybe it's his way of keeping her in,
careful he will be building a cellar room with no windows next
on a serious note would it affect her vision or balance etc...

Re: Molly's whiskers ? U/D 17/11
I had a bad feeling all along that this was what was going on, it's just taken me a long time to catch him in the act.
I think, like Maysie said, it could possibly knock her judgement of space but this has been going on for a while now and I've seen no sign of problems

Junior must have been jealous of her whiskers! Since you have things bunny proofed she probably won't need to feel the whiskers for 'limits'......not that anything would stop her.
