pale

29th of October is the day, I'm scared already.

They told me it's nil by mouth the night before but that's not right, is it? I thought rabbits couldn't throw up?

No that's not right rabbits can eat the same day of an operation they have no gag reflex. I don't think I would trust a vet neutering my rabbit that would say that Shocked

Who told you that it is nil by mouth? A vet/nurse or a receptionist? If it was the latter i wouldnt worry too much, but they should know better. If it was a vet or one of the nurses, i would be looking for a different practice!

If your not sure, i would call back and ask to speak to a vet or nurse and explain what you have been told. You are right, rabbits cant throw up and starving them before surgery is quite dangerous, and at best will slow their recovery, at worst, he could go into stasis.

It was the receptionist, and I think she was new as she kept stopping and asking someone questions (she didn't ask about the nil by mouth thing though)

I don't know what's going on, they're supposed to be a specialist small animal hospital, how could they not know that confused

I'm going to call again and ask to speak to a nurse!

Ok! Just phoned back and spoke to someone else, she was like 'oh no! I'm so sorry you were told that, that's not right at all'

They said feed him as normal and bring some of his food & hay with him for him to eat afterwards (which matches up with what I'd read) phew!

I didn't know who I'd spoken too but she's going to find out and tell them what they said isn't right, gosh that really worried me!!

Lets hope she hasnt been telling any other bunny owners that! dont worry when i booked Marshall in for his the receptionist said 'just hold one moment while i ask if he needs to be starved before the surgery' before i could tell her you should never do that with a rabbit she put me on hold! Mad worked out in the end tho as his neuter went fine and he had some fabulous after care. So i wouldn't worry too much! although i do wonder why people want to be vets receptionists and know so little about the animals

Am glad you have sorted it out. It's no excuse, but she may have been on automatic pilot. One of the vets I saw with a poorly bun asked if they had vomited - she then corrected herself once she realised it was a rabbit she was asking about.

Hopefully the receptionist at your vet's has been put right.

Hope so, it's not the branch I usually go too, the receptionist at my usual vets is also a nurse and is very good (it's only small)

Glad that's all cleared up!

Sending you both love. Try not to worry, send him in with his fave foods and have a nice snugly blankey for him to sleep on. Ask about pain meds and tell him to take it easy.
