My Summer, so brave to the end
Where to start with Summer , she decided to let go last week, it has been such a hard and devastating year for losses here .
She came to me with EC resulting in eye removal and brain damage, but the wee love never let being blind bother her, she found her way about, especially with her husbun Giles, the pair fell for each other right away .
She enjoyed her years here, though put me through a lot of worries, she faught against the odds and overcame an abscess, coped with being blind and brain damaged and never let anything get her down. She forgot things a lot, i used to laugh at supper time, she would hope out from her hay for supper, get confused and go through the tunnel, rememeber she wanted food, but then get distracted by some hay, she would eventually remember she was going for supper .
Over the days before she passed, she had lost a lot of weight, though she would "run" with the others and still loved her food.
This morning, i saw the most devastating scene. I use shallow trugs for hay, and Summer had somehow got herself stuck in the handle. At first i thought she was dead, as she was face down the the hay, her legs over the edge. She was alive, but exhausted. I freed her, gave her some metacam and dried her off (she was soaked from wetting herself). My husband was with her all day as she lay in a carrier with vetbed and fleece, resting, he gave her some food, and she eagerly ate it, bless her, loved her food to the end. She passed away a few hours later .
I do not believe it was getting stuck that killed Summer, and i do not believe it would happen to a "healthy" rabbit, but i have cut the handles off my trugs now.
I feel sick at the thought of her being so distressed, even if she was in her final few days, she did not deserve this, and i will never forgive myself for it happening. Please, if you use trugs, cut the handles off.
Summer, your name was chosen as you were a ray of sunshine, i will always remember you with a smile. I love you so much my brave wee girl

Re: My Summer, so brave to the end
Oh this has made me so very very sad as I met Summer when I went down to collect wee Fudge and Pepsi and she was absolutely gorgeous and I instantly fell in love with her, I'm so sorry Sharon that you have lost her in such a tragic way as I know that Summer was very special to you and much loved
We use tug buckets and have done so for years, we use them to carry the hay in and clean out with them and we have loads all different sizes. I have had the odd bunny jump into them when I have been cleaning out but I am usually there at the time .
Binky free forever at the Bridge Beautiful Summer xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Re: My Summer, so brave to the end
Thank you all
Summer was ever so special, so brave and so affectionate, she would fall asleep getting cuddles or strokes, as Maysie experienced. I miss her so much, and i will never forgive myself for what happened to her.
She is burried beside her wee friends now, whole again at Rainbow Bridge.
