Post by bunny boy Mon Feb 09, 2015 1:01 am

Bunny likes the tag on his toys & blankets, I thought he might like a taggy blanket, they are made out of different types of ribbon, I made one for my g. grandson when he was a baby & he loved it.

I have watched all kinds of videos for bunny toys, store bought or homemade, he shows little or no interest in them confused

There's nothing scarier than a bored bunny Twisted Evil

Does anyone have any ideas why Bunny isn't interested ,& what if anything can I do & ideas for chewys

Try the easy and cheap stuff first.
Toilet roll cardboards filled with hay and treats
Brown paper bags filled with hay and treats
If he chews what is he going for(material) ? Get some of that if it is safe
Empty plant pots, jog hurt pots hide treats under them and let him discover.
Pots with herbs in them to eat and play= Messy though
Tunnels! Big winner usually. Old carpet rolls, waste pipes, anything to hide in when hoomins want to get hold of a bun.
Dandelion and Chicopee roots. Mine love it!
Bare in mind bunnies won't stick long with toys. A few changed over on regular tems will do.

Thanks some of these I tried but a bit different,  I'll try yours,
what treats can he have , I haven't made any yet the one I got from HH.had bananas in it which he doesn't like,
what do you do with the dandelions & chicopees I could put them in the bags & toilet rolls,
yes he likes material, hence the taggy blanket  ( just don't want to encourage the wrong material chewing , the couch , chair ect.)
Bunny gets 2 dandelion leaves twice a day in his veg bowl, can he have more, he eats very litte hay maybe this will help him eat more ,
can I go over his diet with you to make sure I'm doing it right

Of course you can. Run it by if I can help I'm more than happy to do so.
Two dandilion leaves doesn't sound to much. It obviously depends on the size of the bunny.
To explain mine are:
Bertie French lop about 3.5 kg sorry don't do other measures
Bubbles dwarf lop about 3 kg
Vernon special breed all sorts but some Belgian hare in it 3 kg
D.Layla French lop no idea about weight but will be at vet for checking in tomorrow.
The amounts I feed(guidelines only) are
Breakfast a small hand full of pellets for each
Lunch a mixed bowl of fresh. Whatever I get by shopping or find in the garden. I have a herb patch for them, which helps. Amount of a cup(not mug) full for each.
Treats and nibbles of various items like fenugreek crunchies, roots, berries, sticks in between
Supper a small portion of fresh with a few pellets.
They are active bunnies that have a bedroom each pair so lots of space to exercise in.
Dandilion as well as salad can couse lose poo if given in to high quantities.
What do you feed bunny boy?
Main diet should be hay! They have got access to various forms I.e. Timothy, green oat, Inge and meadow at all times!
If you want to encourage a bunny to eat hay try toilet roll filled with it. He will toss it so it may be a bit messy and I hope you got a good Hoover.

Tunnels and cardboard boxes for sitting in and on are always favourites here.

This is a great hit with Spring and Hollie but am not sure whether you can buy it out your way

and these always go down well too

I bought Henners a tunnel for Christmas and was so eager to see him scoot through it but it took him five weeks to creep through it and he has ventured in once since then. He will have fun dragging it around the sitting room though. But he loves yogurt pots and grass balls best of all.
The best toy of all is anything I happen to drop that he shouldn't have.
Best bet is to drop down a bunny toy "accidently on purpose" and he will probably love it.
A forage box is another virtually can't fail entertainment.

Bunny toys in the pet stores suck around here, he has three boxes, one in his condo he sleeps in & redecorates some times, one in living room with shedded paper, he sleeps & redecorates some, third, tv room doesn't bother with much, he has a woven willow hidey & a willow branch hidey he goes in & chews rarley, differant  wood chews  he chews some & baby toys, plays little

I just gave him a toilet roll with timothy & botanical with herds, parsley & dandelion leaves in it, he didn't chew the cardboard but he did flip it around & ate what fell out , now he's lounging,  thank you soooooo much.

l  saw an interactive toy similar a while ago on a video but can't get it here, the chill & chew looks interesting, but can't get it here, unfortunately for Bunny money is tight, I have spent so much on toys & chewys that he 's not interested in, I can't justify much higher costs for ordering, maybe sometime a bit later I will order the interactive toy, hope he likes it.

Our carpet rolls here are to small, he would have to squish into it, ( be very funny to watch ) not so funny if he got stuck (bad mummy) I'm look  for a long tunnel he has a cat tunnel but it's short.

Dropping things doesn't work, he's on to that, he sniffs & hops away

Yeah no kidding, stuff their not suppose to have, nibble, nibble, my oak furniture & fadric chairs, thank heavens I was quick enough & he listens, the couch thats a whole other issue & not his fault.

Sometimes I have to keep a very close eye, I've come to the conclusion  raising toddlers is easyer, even a whole room full.

I will keep trying to find things & some new ideas from all of you as well have aready helped  Bunny & I thank you

Yes they love tossing things about.
Ahh just thought I might be worth a try. An old phone book with the shiny cover pages removed. Some buns love it others not so much. Bertie goes crazy with them. Scratching them and than take pages between his teth and ruuuushts of go the pages. They get shredded to pieces. It made the same noise when my first bunny(childhood) stripped the wall paper off. My mum wasn't amused I thought it was hilarious. If you feed fresh herbs how about putting a rope or washing line up for him. Then use laundry pegs to fit the treats on the line. He will have to stretch and work for his dinner!? Old jog hurt pots, put his pellets in ther(turne up side down) and let him figure out how to get to them.
Bunny toys do not need to be bought in a shop neither do they need to be expensive. That's the good news. Not all bunnies respond to our ideas though. Trial and error it is.Thumbs UpLaughing

Here's Bunnys diet

Bunny is a Dutch King Dwarf He weights about 3 1/2 lbs. & as near as I can figure he turned 1 Feb 7 15

pellets Little Friends Timothy these are very small pellets 1/2 c. Given in pm lasts  till next pm
When I got bunny he was skinny, I read bunnys need food all the time, thats how we arrived at 1/2c. per day

Hay 4 different hays 1 handful each, every day of botanical, oat, orchard & timothy, he's not big on hay, I toss way more than he eats, he likes the chaffe, all store bought.
I got him farm hay once for free, always free,  then was told that's where fleas, mites, tics & any other crawly would be, I couldn't get it out of the house fast enough,  Gary wondered what the streak was that flew by him

fresh water twice a day, not a big water drinker, when I wash his veg leave it very wet to help, when Bun eats veg he has to dry his face

veg 1c. am & pm
am. is
6 pieces kale about the size of my thumb print
2 dandelion leaves
2 or 3 baby carrots cut in stripes
2 spinach leaves
1/2  large leaf lettuce leaf
6 small pieces curly parsley
1med radicchio leaf

pm all the same add 1 sm thin slice apple he adores
1/2 tab papaya

treats oat groats less than 1 tsp. over whole day, at 2 meals, bedtime, & if I go out I forgot once or twice, he turned his back & totally ignored me for a couple of hrs.
Bunny was small when we got him, he was only 4 months, now he's 1 he's bigger & filled out but he's not fat, he's a Foodie like his hoomin mum l want to get a food scale & keep track of his weight

If carpet rolls are too small, see if you can persuade a friendly builder or plumber to part with some offcuts of six inch diameter rigid pipe - the sort used for extraction fans and main waste pipes. All you need to do is give them a quick clean and remove and swarf from the ends with a bit of sandpaper or a file Smile

And for those who don't work in English weights, 3.5lbs is a tad under 1.6kg Wink

Thanks Father Jack this helps indeed! The waste pipes I guess are the same as used in the runabout system. Bunny boy if you can get your claws or hands on those go for it.

Hi Guys I found boxes of florescent lights, the box is 6"long & big enough for Bunny to go through,  he hasn't yet cause he's sulking, wouldn't even eat his bit of apple, which he adores, He got his nail trimmed at the groomers today. I don't very often pick Bunny up cause he hates it, he uses to really freak out, he's a lot better now , anyway he's gained weight,  will need to work on his diet down the road, my little foodie.  Thank you so much Claudia

The runaround pipes are land drainage pipes, you can get them in a sorts of different diameters.

With regards to diet - I thin you are probably now over feeding. Rabbits need constant access to hay, but don't necessarily need commercial foods. The recommendation from the rwaf here in the uk is feed no more than an egg cup of pellets day. Also sugars should be kept to a minimum - so fruit and root veg such as carrots should be viewed as treats and so half a baby carrot a day would be ample. This will help with tooth health as well as weight.

It is worth keeping in mind body scoring charts such as this one http://www.waggfoods.com/content/uk/small-animal-feeding-guide-body-score-chart

And the rwaf have useful leaflets on different aspects of care including the going green leaflet which is a feeding guide. All there info has been put together by experts on rabbit health and can be found here http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/resources/index.php?section=leaflets.html
