Henry at the vets. Empty Henry at the vets.

Since I got him Henners as had an intermittent runny eye.
At first I thought it was a reaction to coming indoors and the open fires and because it was not "permanent" I didn't rush him off to the vets immediately but he had his tear duct flushed on New Years Eve. That didn't seem to make any difference.
Things will be fine for a couple of weeks then I'll get up one morning and find his eye is wet. It's just like a little reservoir has filled and spilled over. It never runs permanently, just one spill that dries quickly and I clean the stiff fur and things are fine for a couple of weeks ... then another spill. It doesn't bother him. He never rubs it or shuts it and there's never been any soreness... afterwards it's like it never happens.
Today though I asked Wendy (his vet) about it when she was giving him his three month physical. It had spilled this morning so it was as fresh as she was ever likely to see it. She gave his eye a thorough checking over, including the horrible orange paper test, but everything is fine; no ulcers, conjunctivitis etc. His eye is fine. And his teeth are spot on. She checked the X-ray Richard took when he flushed his duct at New Year (that X-ray was done to check for any tooth root problem that might cause the eye to run). Nothing had showed up then to cause it so we decided to see how things go until July when it's booster time, but it might just be a "Henry Thing". Of course, should it get worse he will go back.
I was very proud of the way he conducted himself with Wendy and very proud at her comments. I had asked if he had lost weight because I thought he looked thinner. She weighed him, on 25th Nov. when I got him and he weighed 3.5, today he weighed 3.55. She said he had lost some fat but had gained muscle. She said there was no sign of the tooth spurs he had had back in Nov. and said he must be on a good diet and getting plenty of exercise. She and the nurse were very complimentary about his looks and behaviour and at the end of the consult she declared him to be, "In excellent condition, a lean, mean hopping machine!"

I was really impressed with this check up ... twenty minutes in length, fur, eyes, teeth, nail trim, heart/lungs, ears... a thorough going over with lots of fuss and in very calm, quiet surroundings ... and all for £17.55.

Has anyone else got/had a rabbit with an intermittent runny eye like Henry's?

Aww bless him for being such a good boy! Charlie is the only one of mine with Runny eyes - but i know his is caused by tooth roots.

The others are all fine. It could just be that occasionally something irritates it... I wouldn't be surprised will all he gets up to!

Willow gets runny eyes from time to time. I put it down to her being a total hay monster and poking herself in the eye with hay a lot Rolling Eyes

I normally bathe it with sterile water and if it's still not cleared up, I try a cold teabag and that usually does the job Thumbs Up

Well his runny eye seems to be a real mystery. It happens about once every fortnight and is just like one of our tears has spilled out. I bathe the wet fur with lukewarm water then fluff it up to normal when it's dry. It never bothers him, he never wipes his eye, shuts it or blinks. It's never sore and the X-rays taken at New Year when he had his ducts flushed and his teeth checked thoroughly, showed no tooth root issues.
I guess it's just a "Henry Thing!".
Yes, I was very pleased with the price of the check up and the thoroughness. Vet Wendy is also a friend of Richard Saunders so that's another big plus for this practice. Another one is that the head vet/practice owner, Richard, is rather cute (to a lady of my advanced years).
And Henry really is a "Lean, mean hopping machine!".
