Small things we can do - vaccination problem

In light of the vaccination supply problem, I'm considering buying commercial hay rather than farm hay, for the spell between vaccination due date and vaccination actually being done.  I figure there might be less chance of flies in commercial hay, and we all know myxi can be spread by flies!

Is this a stupid idea or might it be worthwhile?

Are there any other small things you can think of that might reduce the risk, even a little??

I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference to be honest :/ the only flies in hay would be squashed dead ones anyway, and don't they have to bite to spread Myxi? I'm not sure if any hay suppliers wash hay :/

That's the thing, I've had heaps of live critters come out of the Ings hay  The bag before this one had a family of moths in it

I don't know if flies would survive the bag and journey tho

The only thing I've ever found in a bag of the alfalfa king hay was a very dead beetle.

I think I'm pretty unlucky when it comes to hay

Part of a statement from MSD (in case you haven't already seen it):

"Practices will be best placed to advise on other ways of reducing the risk of infectious disease - stringent biosecurity and parasite control to reduce the opportunities of infection are particularly vital at this time. Take steps to ensure your rabbits are kept well away from potential sources of infection such as wild rabbits, and discuss with your vet how best to manage the risk of fleas and flies during this period."

Bit useless really.

Do you have any Vets for Pets or Companion Care in your general area? The big chains seem to have some vaccines in stock in many areas. I'm not happy about the idea of my rabbits being vaccinated anywhere else other than with my vets but needs must, especially now Anarchy has active myxomatosis  It *** me of greatly that a V4P 5 minutes from my vets had no idea about the vaccine crisis and had good stock while my rabbit specialist vet up the road ran out recently. It's diabolical mis-management from MSD that the remaining single doses weren't distributed evenly.

Vets for Pets have recently opened in the pets at home in the city so I'll give them a call. I'm the same as you, I'd much rather get it done at my own vet, but I'll go anywhere I have to to get them done. I was planning to phone round every reachable vet at the beginning of October anyway.

I had asked my vet, they got six ampoules left and he explained to me that this is how it happened:
Any company producing vaccinations(both human and animal) has a scheduled plan at which time they run which production as the whole thing needs to be deep cleaned before the next patch of most likely a different vacc. Altogether goes over the production line. So say they are scheduled to do,Myxomatosis vacc every 6 month. Then deep clean and run a flu patch or tetanus or....
After the patch is produced it goes for checks regarding effectiveness, dose, and all sorts. It needs to pass those checks to be distributed onto the market and that is we're the myxomatosis patch this time failed.
Unfortunately they can't just say oh let's run another one because by the time the results are back something else in in production and they need to wait for the next slot to come free, which is six month.
As the batch didn't go to,market it means a major financial loss to the company and the old dual vaccination wasn't produced anymore so there was no back up plan.
I guess ther isn't much anyone can do except of keeping a pile stock stashed away for such events. And the small vet surgeries are unlikely to be able to effort this as when the staff is expired it needs to be thrown away. Maybe they consider to run batches more frequently and produce smaller amounts, but I wouldn't bed on it.

When I booked Arabella in for her vac in October they never said they cannot do it. Is it just some places?

It I'll depend whether your vet has got spares. Don't think I'm rude as I'm not, but I can see the point of getting rescue buns done first rather then an indoor bun. I have offered to keep mine inside if it helps .
Such a worry we dont need.
Jade give them a call and double check whitchurch vaccination they got. 

We are there tomorrow for a claw clip and check up so I will ask if they have them for when I bring her in. They never said not. I do not think you are rude, you are entitled to your opinion hun. xx
