Post by hitchick Mon Jan 26, 2009 2:55 pm

Hello,

I have two Rabbits, Roger who is male and Precious who is female.

I wanted some advise. please.

Roger is nearing 9 years old, so I do need to face the face he might only have a few years left in him.
What I'm wondering is :
I doesn't know how Precious will be when she loses him, because they have been together for 6 years.
I do not want to keep her on her own, two rabbits are so loving together.

What I need to know is, how soon should I try to bond her with another rabbit?
Should I try to introduce another rabbit now, so the 3 of them can bond?
I really don't want her to be lonely, I'm dreading losing Roger but I want to be responsible with planning ahead.

I hope I have explained myself and not rambled too much.

I'm looking forward to people views and what they have done.

Hugs

Sheena

It's good that you are thinking ahead. Roger is a good age now but could have a lot more year yet. Oldest bunny on this forum was 17! Unusual but not impossible.

I had the situation that you are in. I had a bun called Holly who was bonded with a male, Wolfgang. They were together about three/four months and then Holly took ill and died. Wolfie did miss his companion and after a few weeks we got another female, Gloria and he is happily bonded with her now.

When Holly died, Wolfie saw and sniffed the body. He tended to sit in the hutch on his own a lot which wasn't like him and he was obviously missing the company.

I've never had three rabbits so don't know how easy it is to bond them - and it might be hard to bring in a outside rabbit into a close knit bonded paid. Other people on the forum with more experience will be able to help you with that.

Hope you enjoy HH as there is a wealth of information available here.

Welcome to the forum. I have no experience of this, my little 'un is still young and is my first rabbit.

I'm sure some with more knowledge will come along soon x

Welcome to the forum. That is amazing that you have a 9 year old bunster. Well done you Thumbs Up

I would be inclined to say that at such an old age, I wouldn't upset the balance by adding another bun just yet. You may have a long time left with Roger as well Very Happy. Ofcourse it is entirely your decision, but while he seems to happy and well I would leave things as they are.

Can't wait to chat to you more and see pics of your bunnies Wave

I think I will leave them as they are Smile
They are such a loving couple, they are gorgeous to watch together.

I'm hoping we get better weather this year so we can build them a new hutch, as my partner calls it Rabbitnopolis.

I must get some pics up aswell:)

Hiya Wave

I think I'd be tempted to leave things as they are as well. Let's hope Roger has many more years left but well done you for getting him to 9 Shocked

I had a bonded trio - a male and female who were together approximately 2 years before adding an unneutered male into the bargain (he has since been 'done'). There were a few scuffles at first between the boys but it did work out in the end. In retrospect I think I have been very lucky with my bonds and would probably not attempt a trio again unless I had to.

The female recently died and I made sure that both boys has a chance to see her body before she was buried as it seems to make the grieving process easier on them if they 'understand' what's happened.

Look forward to seeing you around the forum!!
