Crepuscular rythyms out of sync.
I'm sure I'm asking this far too early, as Stewie has been here for less that a week, but he has very different rhythms that Berts, and doesn't really seem to follow the crepuscular pattern. I don't know what his patterns and routines were at the Rescue, but he gets up with Paul, eats, sleeps for 2-3 hours, gets up again at lunch, eats, sleeps 2-3 hours, gets up mid afternoon, then is awake and playing until 7, has dinner, then sleeps til 10, then is completely awake. When we have to go to bed he's at his most active and is not at all happy about bedtime coming so soon.
Is this just cos he's a teenager or he just needs more time to get used to our patterns? Any ideas would be helpful as he spent nearly an hour bar chewing last night, and I don't want to distress him so early on into his time here

Both of mine hate it when I go to bed too...they seem to be most active in the evening and at night...and then settle down a bit towards morning. Sometimes it's worse than other times...can't say I know why :/...
I try to chuck something new in their cages to keep them amused and stop them bar chewing, any kind of new toy type thing or scatter some treats around or I move some of their stuff around. Sometimes it works...but when it's a bad night nothing seems to keep them quiet except a quick ten minute run about.
They've both settled down a bit more now though, so maybe he does just need to get used to the way you do things. Sorry I can't be more help lol hope he settles down soon

Re: Crepuscular rythyms out of sync.
Oh Bless him.
As you know - daisy is awake and busy all morning, sleeps all afternoon then gets up about five for an hour or so, then back to bed until about 8.30 when he is a loon. He never seems tired or sleepy when we go up to bed but theres never any noise either so i have no idea what he does - whether thats sleep or awake!
Seems a shame if Stewie is sleeping through the best part of his attention time! Bless him.
Maybe he will settle down and get more into your routine as he gets used to it.

Rabbits are normally nocturnal so i'd say this is normal.

Re: Crepuscular rythyms out of sync.
Thanks for your help guys, I think i'm just being an over fussy dad
The thing that's amazing is that he has almost gone free range already, and is only in his cage at night. I can't yet trust him to not trash the office in the night, but the sooner I can get him out of the cage all together, the better

This isn't quite true, there is a marked difference between nocturnal and Crepuscular, that latter meaning 'most active at dawn and dusk', the former meaning, asleep all day and active only at nightVelvet.Tears wrote:Rabbits are normally nocturnal so i'd say this is normal.

Re: Crepuscular rythyms out of sync.
Hi Jay, reading your post reminded me of when my children were small babies with their own little routines
With an unsettled baby, I used to pop them in my baby sling and go for a walk, not sure how a rabbit would respond to that though
Saying that, I once had the pleasure of living with a small black dog that used to love riding in a rucksack on the back of my motorbike!

Re: Crepuscular rythyms out of sync.
I can actually see Stewie in a rucky on my back when I'm cycling He seems to be fascinated with getting into things at the mo, am having to keep very vigilant with closing the toilet seat!Vince the bunny wrote:Saying that, I once had the pleasure of living with a small black dog that used to love riding in a rucksack on the back of my motorbike!
Thanks for your help guys, I took a brave move last night and left him out of his cage, in the office and just closed the door so he couldn't move around the place at night. Came in this morning, and he hadn't trashed a thing, was sound asleep behind the chair

It sounds like he is settling in well I left Rosie free ranging the back room when I went out this morning and when I came back she was dozing by the radiator, bless.

Re: Crepuscular rythyms out of sync.
I had to look up what this meant Jay! I think that he will settle to your pattern in time. He will want to be in sync with the rest of the warren. My house bunnies have always seemed too. I do love watching them snooze in the day thought when they are all whiskers and eyebrows twitching
