Allergies? Empty Allergies?

Post by lexybee91 Thu Jan 27, 2011 6:25 pm

As i've mentioned before isobelle has a respitory problem, it's upper at the moment and i thought it was chronic snuffles- vets first thoughts too. We put her on medication and it didn't work so the vet agree'd with what pets at home had said - probably not wanting to discuss it any further.

But my friend mentioned that snuffles often comes with, discharge from nose and eyes and sneezing.

Well..Isobelle deffinaitly has discharge from her nose, but she doesn't sneeze, she weazes. I don't know for sure, but could this be an allergy? Obviously, if it is it would have to be something that was present both in my house, and at pets at home. The only two things I can think of are, Other animals, Hay or sawdust?

Any ideas would be appreciated to discuss with the vet on sunday as i've booked her in. I've had short lived chest infections and panic attacks,it's not nice to not be able to breathe properly. So it must be horrible for her!I would really like to get this sorted, I don't care if I have to pin her down -not literally- and syringe her medicine every day from now till timbuck two :)xx

Sometimes hay can be dusty and make animals wheezy, but if there is a discharge it does sound like it might be an infection.

The hay is advertised as "dust free" so I assume they suck it out *shrugs*! Could it be something horrible like VHD or myxi? Or is it snuffles, wouldn't that have gone away with the treatment of ivermec? x

Its Definitely not Mixi or VHD in sure of it.

I dont know a lot about snuffles but there will be someone along who does I would have thought.

Are you using sawdust? That can be an irritant sometimes. You might be better just using newspaper in the bottom of her cage. I know that a lot of Hoppers dont use it, and just use newspaper.

I don't put sawdust in her cage. But I was thinking if it was a sensitive allergy, it's in the guinea pig cage next to her. It's not saw dust, it's wood shavings though, lol. I get so confused. xox

It isn't VHD, which is a haemorrhagic disease, which means internal bleeding. It is the silent killer because you often just find your bunny dead if it isn't vaccinated.

Myxi usually shows itself with swollen eyes and lumps on the face.

I think it is the snuffles that is making your bunny wheezy rather than the hay, I'm afraid. The baytril that she had is an antibiotic. You might need to ask the vet the take a swab of her nose so they can see what kind of bacteria they are dealing with, then they can perhaps target it with a more effective antibiotic.

I would also keep her away from the guinea pigs because they can catch the bacteria that causes snuffles too. It is very infectious.

How long has she had it? What exactly are her symptoms, A runny nose & noisy breathing? Does the breathing sound wet or dry (Sounds a ridiculous question but anyone with a snuffly bun will know what Im talking about) Also does it sound as though its in her nose or her chest? How long was the course of baytril? Its always the first thing they give out but rarely works, especially in the courses they give it in (Normally something daft like a weeks course). Sorry for the Q's but will be able to help you more if we know Smile Smile XX

Seriously, I appreciate the questions! Anything that I can do to help her, or atleast arm me with possobilities to go to the vet with!

Sounds, wet...like she's sniffing back ...snot? :/ Um, sounds like it's low...possibly a chest infection, what would the symptoms of pnumonia be?

she doesn't REALLY like to do anything, though she'll run away if you try to touch her, she's really shy.

Baytrill was a week and it didn't clear - i've never known anything to clear in that shrot a time Sad

Let us know how she gets on on sunday hun. Bless her. I think she will definitely need to be on the anti-biotics for longer than a week.

Poor little love. Please give her a nose rub from me. x x

It's okay lovely.

Um, she's no different than she has been since we first got her. So, I don't know really. The vet didn't really say much except what I already knew. They didn't give her anything to be treated with either so I don't really know what to say or do. I'm going to get a second opinion though.
