VHD reactions in older rabbits
Something that I seem to have noticed is quite often buns are fine with Cylap, and then when they are 4+ they seem to have reactions. So many peoples buns are fine with it then one year not - is that a co incidence?
Pebbles had a nasty reaction last time and while the loss of hair and redness didnt scab or go all sceptic - it wasnt very nice for her. And she was definately very upset with it all because she is normally a cuddly bun if you can get her, where as then she was getting onto my lap with choice and snuggling into me and she happily spent the whole day away from the other two curled up snuggled into my bed while i typed. (mine dont care if one goes away for a few hours, its good really because i can take them to the vet without having to take them all!).
So I dont want her to have it again, but she isnt due until August, but Jelly is due in April. Peanut and Jelly were April, Domino and Pebbles in August, so now poor Jel is the odd bod.
My vet hasnt heard of Anivac which Jay mentioned before and they said they cant get Lapinject because I would have to pay for 5 vials.
Now if all three were having it it could be done I guess, even though its an added pointless expense. But now its Jellys turn I just feel a bit cautious giving it to her when pebbles reacted like that...any advice??

Re: VHD reactions in older rabbits
I asked for Lainject last time and had to pay for 5 doses, I was expecting it to be monster money, but it was only an additional £16, which I thought was worth it, because daisy did have horrible reaction to cyclap, and I do only have to one boy to do.
If Jelly hasnt had a problem before she may be okay this time as well hun.
I'm afraid I would be tempted to tell my vet to look up Anivac. Surely keeping abreast of new developments and medicines is part of their job??

Re: VHD reactions in older rabbits
Go for Anivac, ask the vet to order it in advance - it's cheaper for them too, and doesn't have the mineral oil suspension that Cylap has.
Wouldn't know if older buns are affected by Cylap or not, but I only gave it to bertie twice and he wasn't well afterwards.

This was when Jay first mentioned it so they might know of it now. I guess I just would feel guilty if she got a reaction, I cant really pay nearly £60 for all three each year it is alot of money. hmmm.

Re: VHD reactions in older rabbits
Have emailed the surgery, explaining the situation and I have said I dont mind Lapinject or Anivac but we are not having cylap anymore.
I also said I am not prepared to pay more to have lapinject and seeing as cylap affects 50% of rabbits im sure there is other buns who had a reaction too so if we went on the same day the cost could be scaled down.
I said I dont want to go to another surgery but i need to put them first! seeing as they get most of my money I hope they will get it in!

Well done hun! You are the customer after all, and they should be thinking of what is best for the buns.
