Love birds U/D Newlyweds are home!
As some of you may know Tigger is a single outside bun, however this Sarurday she is going on her bunnymoon! She's getting hitched!
I'm taking her up to a rescue where they will take the next week, give or take a few days depending on the dates , to bond her with a gorgeous hubby of my choice.
This is where the moral dilemma starts. A couple of months back I popped up to see the buns and found a gorgeous little boy called Sprat. I was told that I was able to reserve him until Tigger had been spayed, there appeared to be no problem so I agreed.
At first he had no teeth problems despite his dad and sister having an awful time with theirs but recently his incisors have been less than perfect. I now know that if I get this little boy there will be a lifetime of dental treatment and worry. I must now decide what to do as there are other prospective husbuns there. I'm not in the best financial situation, of course I'm able to look after two buns fine but it's the problem of having to shell out for treatment for this guy ad he won't be insured for it.
I also feel awful to have had him waiting for this long.
All I can say is oh poo

I would just explain that while you are happy to tackle any health problem a bunny has in the future, you feel its best for you financially to take on a rabbit with no health problems initially as you plan on getting him insured, and dont want anything to be exempt. Im sure they will understand.

Re: Love birds U/D Newlyweds are home!
Ah dear that is a hard decision. However, if you don't feel you can give him the care he needs then perhaps it is better to choose a bun better suited to you. Someone else will come a long who can care for him and afford his treatment without the stress you will feel you will be taking on.
I would say adopt him if you felt you could cope and afford the treatment that he will end up needing. Though it sounds like you can't , I suppose the good thing about going to a rescue is because you can learn these problems before acquiring the rabbit and then pick one right for you. However, that's just my opinion. I hope you decide soon and either way whichever bunny you choose you will be giving one a much needed and deserved home!

Yeah, I of course would never take on a bun that I could not look after. I would give a bun whatever treatment it would need, it's just that this could be a lot more costly. I really don't want people to think badly of me

I know you wouldn't , sorry that's not what I meant it to sound like. I'm sure the rescue will understand, you are giving somebun a home either way. If anything, they should be pleased that you are being sensible enough to know that you can't give this bunny the home he needs and that means you are a responsible pet owner! What SarahJane said seems like the right thing to tell them, it's the truth after all, who knows it could be fate and Tigger will meet a different bun who's perfect for her

Re: Love birds U/D Newlyweds are home!
I dont think anyone would think badly of you hun.
Perhaps you could ask them how severe the problem is before making a final decision?
It could be that he just needs more hay in his diet, or there may be long spans between dentals. Some dental buns go a year between dentals.
Im sure they will understand whatever decision you make but its worth asking for more info first just in case its not as bad as you think.
Im really happy that Tigger is getting a husbun. She really is a lucky girl to have such a brilliant mummy!

Sorry Lily I didn't mean that's what I thought you meant I was just justifying my reason a bit further since I forgot to put that bit.
The three of you have helped a lot thankyou. As Shellys Bobby would say Fank yoous 'oppers
I'll ask how severe it is and will then say what SJ said depending on how bad it is. And who knows it could be fate!
I'm so excited to get her a husbun. She loves company and I have a feeling I'll have my hands full

I think you are being very sensible. It is so easy to just plunge in and then be out of your depth. You could get him checked by a vet and see if they think they are very bad. But if you know that your finances are not going to be good enough to cope with regular dentals - and they can be very expensive. If they involve a general it can be over £100.
I am sure that the rescue will understand and will think you are doing the right thing if you choose another bun.

Re: Love birds U/D Newlyweds are home!
When you take her dating are you going to introduce her to a range of male buns? That might be a good idea to ensure that she gets the husbun that she likes the best, it certainly makes for easier bonding. Also, if you do that, you might find that she likes one of the other buns better.
I agree with what's been said above. If you can't get insurance, dental buns can be very expensive. If you simply cannot afford it, the shelter will understand. If they get upset about it explain that you can't afford dental care, and wouldn't they rather Sprat have someone who can afford to take him to the vet, instead of suffering with bad teeth because his owner couldn't afford the fees? They'd be stupid to insist you take him then.

Yeah it's true otherwise they'd simply be going against what they set out to do which is to make sure buns go to a good home. There are range of male buns up there, I'm not exactly sure of how the bonding process works but I think they ask you to choose 3 and then they introduce her to them and if she's not impressed she will call 'next'
Thanks Nickie, I thought it was a sensible thing to do I just felt quite awful about it, I can be made to feel guilty quite easy you see!

Re: Love birds U/D Newlyweds are home!
Tigger may well take the decision out of your hands, and choose another bunny - this is a common thing with rescue bondings - we can't plan who our buns will fall for.
I think you've received some very sound advice on the thread
Good luck

When Josephine went dating she snarled and huffed at the cutest bunnies that I was absolutely in love with, and chose Big Bruce.
Jay's right, it can be taken completely out of your hands! Hopefully in this case you don't have to decide

I know, my mum and a lot of my friends laughed at me for taking her dating! It was hilarious, the rescue shelter put the boys up in a row of pens next to each other (but with solid metal walls between them) and she moved her way down the row of pens visiting until we'd realised which one she liked best. On the plus side, when Bruce is bad we can blame Josephine for choosing the wrong husbun

Re: Love birds U/D Newlyweds are home!
Just an update.
Took Tigger on the one hour journey to the rescue and she was as good as gold in the car. The longest she's ever travelled was 15 minutes and when I had a peep she had flopped out.
First little boy we are trying her with is called Jeeves he's a gorgeous ginger and white lop and has the sweetest temperament. Other buns were recoiling away from you when you went to stroke them, obviously because they cannot get a huge amount of interaction as there are so many other buns... but he just trotted up to me and loved a good old nose rub!
The second he saw her on the other side of the shed between the divider he just couldn't stop looking at her, if it was like a cartoon he would have had hearts in eyes hehe. She wasn't phased by him at all, was happily munching on hay and as she hopped along from right to left he would follow like a lovestruck puppy. They started having kisses through the mesh and he started pulling on the mesh to try and get in with her.
All good signs so far!
They were fine about the other bunny, they said that someone else was thinking of taking him anyway.

She said for me to text her in a couple of days to see how it's going. So excited! But it's going to be so weird without her here for a week. Gives me a chance to have a good old clean out though.
I have a photo on my phone but I can't upload it will have to wait until tomorrow I'm afraid!

That's so cute! My Bruce did the same thing when he met Josephine - she wasn't terribly fussed with him, but when they were separated he would follow her through the wire and constantly try to be with her - it was so cute! They're very well bonded now as well.
It's good that they understood with the other bunny, and that the other bunny might have another home
