Buns that don't eat much hay... Empty Buns that don't eat much hay...

Post by Jay Wed May 11, 2011 3:18 pm

I tried this with Stewie, and it worked a treat, so if you try it, could you let me know if it works..

I took a little bit of hay in the bowl, then grated a pellet over it with the really fine dust size grater bit. Put another small layer on and grated another pellet over it, and twice more, till I had a nice stack with pellet dust in between layers, and he ate a lot more of the hay than he normally would Smile

I also tried tumbling the hay and dust, but he just pushed the hay out of the way and found the dust at the bottom of the bowl, so less successful!

Thats a good idea Smile My buns eat alot of hay anyway however i did find doing a similar tactic but using dried herbs/leaves instead caused them to forage more, this was more to get them more active but could work for non hay eating buns too.

Yeah I tried that,. Stewie just ate the herbs! If this works for others, might be worth mentioning in your hay article? Smile

I have done a paragraph on ways to encourage hay eating, so will include your tip too Smile

We also mixed dried grass in with hay for a foster bun once who didnt eat hay and that got him eating it, but i guess it comes down to how stubborn they are!

Mine dont really eat much hay at all, instead they eat dried grass [just grass] which is pretty much the same thing when you think about it lol

i read somewhere if you water down natural fruit juice that's low in sugar, or juice your own fruits and then spritz some in a spray bottle on the hay that can also help with hay eating.

I like your idea tho, sounds like a good way to get them munching

I am going to try both of these ideas. Wolfie used to be such a good hay eater but since Gloria died, he doesn't any more and I blame Felix! They don't even eat grass, which is worrying.

Will let you know how we go.

Yeah Ill try some of this with Daisy, too. Her hay-eating is picking up since she got more squidgy, but she could do with more hay...
