Another bunny not eating *Update*
Good evening,
It's been a while since I have been here.. as soon as bunny was poorly I thought of asking you all for some advice (after being to the vets first of course!)
I have noticed that have been quite a few bunnies who havent been eating recently, so i apologise if this has already been mentioned!
Two weeks ago Domino has her Myxi jab which she seemed fine with and always has done. We were going away for the royal wedding weekend so she was put into boarding, where has been numerous times before and is well looked after. The day after we collected her we noticed she hadn't eaten as much as usually does (which in her case is a lot!) but wasnt too worried as I thought this may be her adjusting to home again.
Her eating didnt improve over the next two days and she was doing something weird with her mouth. Opening it quite wide to one side quite and the sound of saliva in her mouth was loud. I thought she was had something stuck in her mouth so took her to the vets... he didnt find anything, said her teeth were fine and gave her two injections with some powder to put on her food. The supply was for a week, which finished at the weekend, and nothing has improved. She is eating grass, fruit and veg but is avoiding her pellets. Also, her poo is really small, which im not too suprised by as she isn't eating much!!
I have her booked in again for thursday morning as im convinced there is something else wrong as its been going on for over a week. She is fine in herself, the only difference in her that i have noticed is that is she more affectionate and wants more attention. She is still making this odd noise/mouth movement too!
Does anyone have any idea whats wrong with her, or have come across a similar thing??
Thank you xx

Re: Another bunny not eating *Update*
Hi Hun,
Sorry to hear she is poorly.
I would say that there is something wrong, and it does sound like a mouth problem, most likely her teeth.
sometimes the vet cant see inside the mouth properly while they are awake and they need to be given a GA in a lot of cases so the vet can have a proper look.
As GA's can slow the gut down I would ask the Vet to do this as soon as possible before she slows down too much beforehand.
It might be a good idea to syringe feed her some critical care mix to keep her tummy turning over and so that she is getting some nutrients into her. If her poo's are tiny this may be the start of a stasis episode so you need to keep her hydrated and keep her belly ticking over.
I have a dental bun and when his teeth are bad, he will eat grass but wont eat his nuggies, so it does sound similar. We have had a bout recently where he stopped eating and it became quite serious, so I would recommend to anyone that they take steps early to avoid this.
Please let us know how she is, and if you need anything at all, let us know.
Sending lots of nose rubs for domino and hugs for you x x

Re: Another bunny not eating *Update*
It sounds to me as if she may have dental spurs on her back molars, and this is why she is opening her mouth wide as she may be in some discomfort, I think I'd be apt to try and get her to the vets before Thursday.
Hope Domino will be ok .

Aww, poor Domino
I would agree with KatieB and Tuckerbunnies, it sounds like it would be her back teeth as it sounds like how Penelope was a few weeks back. I thought it was just her non eating episode, but it turned out to be her back teeth.
Mention it to your vets over the phone tomorrow and see what they think, and take her in for a dental as soon as.
Also with what KatieB said, try feeding her critical care to make sure she is keeping hydrated and it doesn't turn more serious.
Sending lots and lots of vibes for Domino and Penelope is sending him bunny kisses too xx
Let us know how you get on x

Re: Another bunny not eating *Update*
Concur with all the above. This sounds like dental problems. Especially if she is drooling. Your vet can look at the back teeth with a otoscope but it is best done with a GA. They can sometimes just mask the rabbit so it isn't a full GA and then just get in a clip the spurs.
The small poos are a clear sign of the beginning of stasis so you need to get her to a vet soon.

Re: Another bunny not eating *Update*
Thank you for your advice, i appreciate the vibes for Domino and the hug for myself!!
We took her back to the vets, her weight had dropped again, still within a normal range but as it is a sudden loss they were worried and were satisfied it wasnt just a case of her going off her food! They put her under GA to check her teeth and they also didnt xrays of her tummy to check for blockages, and everything was fine. She is physically fit and healthy... but obviously there is something going on still! We have been give Bayril and Metoclopramide Syrup to feed her orally (which is a challenge - if anyone has any tips on how I can do this easily, i would very much appreciate it!). We were advised to give her different foods then her usual to try something different. Up until this evening she barely ate or drank anything. I was told by a friend that giving her water with the syringe too may help to at least get some water inside of her. She has eaten some banana, and after she eats she is still opening her mouth wide and cleaning with her paws.
We have another appointment for monday morning for a check up to see how she has been over the weekend... Im not holding out for much of an improvement. It really breaks my heart seeing her like this... I just want her to eat! I never thought i would ever have this problem with her... she usually eats everything and more!!

Re: Another bunny not eating *Update*
Oh what a worry Syringing water is a good idea, and ask your vets for some pro-biotics on Monday - it's usually Bio-Lapis, comes in sachets, and goes in the water. Did they X-Ray her teeth?
So sorry you're both going through this, when they get ill it's just such a worrying time

Re: Another bunny not eating *Update*
It is worth getting her some pain killer too, it may be that something is hurting her that you dont know about and when she has some pain killer she will eat.
I had this with daisy a year or so ago, he wasnt eating, took him to the vets 7 times they couldnt find anything wrong. Took him to a specialist who did find the problem but he had been in a lot of pain, and as soon as the pain was relieved he started to eat again.
I dont know how much your vet charges for out of ours, but I deffo think its worth a call to ask if you can go and collect some metacam as soon as you can.
Katie
PS you also need to get some food into her, she needs to be syringe fed really. Food and luke warm water. I would say its quite urgent to do this now, stasis is soooo dangerous.
Good luck hun x x x x
