Poor Emily Empty Poor Emily

I have noticed Emily's front teeth are very long, she has been eating and drinking ok. I took her to the vets today and he said she has a misaligned jaw, is this the same as malocclusion? Anyway the vet trimmed them for me but he said that experts are now saying that filing is the proper way to treat them.

I have to keep an eye on her and then take her back if problems occur again which it probably will, has anyone ever had there bunnies front teeth exracted? The vet said its a bigger opperation than you would think so can't be done the same time as being spayed.

Oh no, poor little Emily. I should think that a misaligned jaw is just another way of explaining malocclusion yes. I am afraid I don't know much about problems with incisors, all three of mine have molar problems but I am sure someone who can be more helpful will be along soon. Good luck.

I know from one of the rescue buns I have met that rabbits have real problems grooming themselves if their teeth are extracted, though if its essential what can you do Crying or Very sad I have read that trimming the teeth can cause them to split and become infected and that is why they are usually filed.

But absolutley dont take my word for it, im a novice!

Someone who knows alot more than I will be able to advise you im sure Smile

Many years ago our rabbit Keegan got his front incisor teeth stuck in the wire pet carrier on the way to the Vet's for his check up after being neutered, by the time I got to the Vet's he had managed to get his teeth out of the wire carrier but he had pulled them slightly forward and unfortunately they grew back misaligned and eventually he had to have his incisor teeth extracted. I just chopped up all his greens into small pieces that he could manage, you have to make sure they have not got a dirty bottom as they can't keep themselves as clean as when they had teeth and you have to make sure you brush them more as they have difficulty in grooming themselves Smile

This may be of help to you

I would only have an extraction as a very very very last resort, filing them down can be quite simple and the vet can carry this out easily.
