Questions About Flys
after i put the bunnies back in the cage at night,i go in the run and sweep all the poo's up what i can see but iam still worried about fly strike,i have sprayed them with the fly guard but i have noticed a different fly around the run (i dont know if its becouse iam takin more notice now becouse of the bunnies) so finally my question lol, i try and pick all the poo i can see but iam sure they will be some that i miss,so if the flys lay eggs on them, how long does it take for them to hatch into maggots and would it be better to hose the grass down every night too? i do try and move the run,so its not in the same spot but we do only have a tiny garden,so there is not much room
thank you
Sarah

Re: Questions About Flys
I think everything you are doing is fine, I don't know too much about it but I'm sure it's only more of a risk if your buns have dirty bottoms from wet poo! Someone with more knowledge shall come a long though

Re: Questions About Flys
It sounds like you are doing all the right things. Its more of a problem if the buns have runny poo and/or are unable to clean themselves.
Have you thought of popping a littler tray into their hutch? This may make it easier for you get the poo up each day (hopefully they will use it).
You should ideally try and do a quick bum check everday - make sure everything looks nice and clean down there.

Re: Questions About Flys
You could try a tray in the run too - this might make them understand that thats where poo's go all the time. Avoid confusion. Little bit of newspaper / litter with some hay on top.

Re: Questions About Flys
I'd deffo have a look at the video above. It's really important to be aware of Flystrike, but you sound as if it's really bothering you, and you may not ned to be so worried. If the buns are clean, kept clean and are having no messy poos, urine on fur etc, then they should be ok.
I'd go with twice daily bum checks, and maintaning the cleanliness of their accommodation, and try to not over worry about it. If you do see any sticky bottoms, eggs or maggots around the place, then be extra vigilant - if you see any on your buns, take them to a vet.

Re: Questions About Flys
I watched that video one night and was so impressed with it I got Mike to look at it to and we both agreed it was the best video or anything we had ever seen before explaining in great detail about flies and flystrike...it's just brilliant!
