Swollen ear? Empty Swollen ear?

Post by JoeyBunsMum Sun Jul 31, 2011 9:24 pm

I've noticed Joey's ear seems a bit swollen/hard to me in one area and it's quite warm (although I know the weather may be contributing to that) .
He had his first myxo jab just over a week ago.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Fran x

Hi Fran,

I think its unlikely that it is the Myxo causing this but its worth checking out.

Has he been shaking his head at all?

He has had an issue with some mites on and off, but I've had a feel around and noticed there's a little swollen lump and I'm sure it's hotter than the other ear. Feeling stressed now. Sad

Also noticed it's been down the last couple of days (he normally has helicopter ears)

Is it worth putting a wet flannel or cloth or his ear to cool it a bit?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks (sorry for double post, but I've got the bunny mummy worries)

How is he this morning?

Deffo worth a cool with a flannel hun, but would whip him off to the vets to make sure that whatever it is isnt infected.

Let us know how you go - sending Vibes for Joey x x x

If there's a lump, then it's probably best to get it looked at - if it's an abscess, for example, the quicker you get it treated the better.

Thanks for the vibes Jay and Katie. He seems about the same today, his poor little ear still quite warm. We are off to the vets later today so will update later.

Thanks

Oh dear poor boy! It could be a few things, mites can cause the ear to become hot and swollen, it could be infection or as someone said an abscess anyway you will soon know and I hope he will be ok.

Back from the vets , and it seems Joey's ear problem is a reaction from his myxo jab. He had the vaccination in the back of his neck and some in his ear, as this is the correct way to administer it but seems he's had a bit of issue with it. At least it wasn't an abcess. He's got some metacam to take for a few days, so baby will be extra grumpy methinks!

Thanks everyone Smile I'm sure he will enjoy more big sloppy kisses and cuddles from his HH aunties! His ear seams a bit less thick and swollen, so hopefully the Metacam is helping now. I'm also thankfully a bit calmer!

I found it interesting about the vaccination too,Katie. Our vet said it was supposed to given in the ear and neck as it's more effective, and many vets don't know or do this.

It is indeed the right way to do it. I had to ask my local vet to do it last time!!!!! Daisy's never had a reaction from it though.

Its amazing how there are vets out there that dont keep up with the latest developments in medicines etc.

Glad he is getting better bless him.
