Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
I was pondering this question the other day. I didn't know whether to post the question or not as I don't want to upset or offend anyone, but I've been on the forum long enough now for folk to realise I don't go around deliberatly posting nasty posts, so I must confess I have tried rabbit, although it was a while ago before I discovered my love for bunnies in my garden rather than on my plate.
The local butcher had some in, so out of curiosity I tried it. Made the house stink and tasted horrid, wouldn't eat it again I shudder at the thought now, especially as wild buns are my favouite type, and I love the agouti domestic ones
I just wondered if anyone else had ever tried it and what they thought of it.....

Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
My Grandparents were not overly wealthy and my Grandad would fish and go shooting to bring home 'free' food a lot when I was very little. Because of this there was almost always a rabbit hanging up in the back shed. But I don't remember ever eating any. This really stopped when his last cocker spaniel died and he did not replace her or go shooting any more. But I also think there was a real period in our area where myxi was really bad and people would not eat wild rabbit because of it. I certainly do not agree with farming rabbits for food partially for the obvious welfare issues and also because I just can't get my head around people who keep domestic breeds of rabbit for meat purposes.

My MIL used to cook rabbit and when I first got to know my OH, I sometimes had it for tea. It was a bit like strong chicken. It obviously isn't something that I would eat now!

I have never tried it or would ever want to but I do understand that years ago people use to eat rabbit and I don't have a problem with that..it's life.

Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
I bought rabbit not that long ago from the farmers market, but I am afraid to say it went in the bin because when I opened it a few days later it absolutely stank and I didn't know if that meant it was off

Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
Although I love my buns sooooo much I realy dont disagree with hunting rabbit. If they are out in the wild they have more of a chance to escape the bullet that the ones that are bred in enclosures awaiting their fate or If some idot comes and steals a bun for that reason. I have never tried rabbit and wouldnt want to as when I look at my little buns face It just turns my stomach. Glad I didnt get chickens now

Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
I've never eaten rabbit, the thought of it always turned my stomach. To me it was just unsavoury, like eating your pet dog. Thankfully I've never been a big meat eater and I'm happily a vegetarian now

Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
^ I am with you on all of the above. I couldn't imagine eating any animal now, never mind the same kind of animal that I keep as a pet!JoeyBunsMum wrote:I've never eaten rabbit, the thought of it always turned my stomach. Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
Nope never and never would try it. My Mum has to shield the bit that has the rabbits in at the butchers because I cry if I see them

Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
I've never eaten rabbit and I would never want to, even though I feel a bit hypocritical saying I won't eat them because I have them as pets but am happy to eat other animals jst because I don't have an emotional attatchment to that species :/. I eat A LOT less meat now than I used too which I'm proud of

Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
Think I probably have but I would have been so young I shall never remember doing so.
My father was employed as "Vermin Controll" man on this Estate when we came here in 1952. He was in charge of rabbit control amongst other things. From that date until the onset of Myximatotis in 1953 I may have been given bunny.... I was about two when myxi struck.

Re: Have you ever eaten a rabbit?
I can't believe it now, but when I was about 6ish we use to have a New Zealand white (always called 'Charlie') in my nan's garden, then when he got big Uncle Ben use to swap it for a baby bunny......the next day was Rabbit stew, don't shout at me cos I didn't know! I always remember the baby bun and the stew the following day but was too young to connect the two.
And then a few years later I went to collect a rabbit with my nan from his allotment and never ate meat after hearing the poor thing scream.
Last year my mum was complaining when she came to my house about all the money I'd spent on vet bills and then she came out with a pearler " Charlie never had medical problems" so I screamed back-" cos Charlie never made it to 1 year old". I shot here down!!!
