Re: Newspaper
Thumper used to eat paper like it was going out of fashion and it never did her any harm BUT a vet did tell me to stop putting papers down for her. "She eats papers, yes?" the vet said.
I meant to ask at the time how she knew she was eating it but I forgot to. It's bothered me for years that has!
On the rare occasion that OH puts a paper on the floor, she'll sneak over and munch a little bit and I have to chase her away. It's hillarious

Re: Newspaper
I think that the danger is that they fill themselves up on empty calories so feeling full and not eating nutritious food. Also, some printer inks in large quantities are probably not a good idea. I think that you have to be extra careful with coated magazine style paper and coloured ink.
Mine used to eat the odd bit but not much. In the end, paper is made from wood pulp so it does give them fibre, but if they eat a lot of paper, it takes the edge off their appetite and stops them eating food.
Maybe, they are supermodels, they live on toilet paper!

Re: Newspaper
The general advice is that B&W papers are fine but anything printed on glossy paper or in full colour (like magazines or supplements) are to be avoided. I think most rabbits nibble on them, certainly all seem to enjoy destroying them.
Phone books are recommended as an excellent toy so the risk from consumption is obviously low to none.

Re: Newspaper
Florence does that to beg for "proper" food. I know I've kinda taught her that, as when she does it she gets veg, but it is sweet. It hadn't crossed my mind it might be bad for her
I'm curious now too how the vet knew Thumper ate it!

Re: Newspaper
Make sure the newspaper doesn't contain colored ink, as it's the coloured ink that causes the problems.

Thumper's appetite hasn't been very good recently, so it might be that she is eating newspaper so she isn't hungry for food. Empty calories make baggy bunnies.

Thankfully she has been clean of her paper eating habit for a few years. Ok, she has the odd slip once in a blue moon but that's all. She's mostly a recovered addictNickieM wrote:icedancer wrote:Florence does that to beg for "proper" food. I know I've kinda taught her that, as when she does it she gets veg, but it is sweet. Re: Newspaper
Picture the scene, a small dingy room filled with rabbits. One periscopes and says out loud, 'My name is Thumper and I am a paperaholic' The room is filled with bunny applause (which isn't very loud cos their wee paws are so furry! )
