Sore Hocks how can this happen? UD been to see Mr C
Was checking the boys bum etc last night and i touched the back of his foot and he flinched. when I moved the fur out of the way he has sore looking hocks.
Its not big, the skin isnt broken but when I presses on it it went white and then back to bright pink. Ive never heard of this in a nethie before.
I feel like a terrible bunny mum that I can let this happen to him, and that I havent noticed before. This explains him being off lately and me not being able to figure out why I think.
the only thing I can think is that as I was off studying and then off sick he was spending a lot more time in the front room and perhaps the rug in there is harsher on his feet.
He is already on Baytril long term and cant have septrin as he reacts badly to it.
I have put a soft fleece blanket on top of his rug. Is that the right thing to do...thats a man made fabric too - it is softer than his normal rug though - is that right???
What else can I do hoppers??
Katie

Aww poor little man
It's a tricky one, sore hocks can just com eout of nowhere. If the skin isn't broken, that's a good sign.
Obvious reason I can think of is that his weight is bearing down more on one foot than the other, causing the hair to erode. Only thing I can think of that would cause a this in one foot is a displaced hip, but that's just an idea.
What I've done with the bear is to dab surgical spirit on the bald bits - hardens the skin up. Problem with that re: Daisy, is that Stewie's sore hocks are here to stay, so I have to manage them. Daisy shouldn't really have them, so you may be able to get it healed and the fur grow back.
Keep it really dry, remove wet litter, and give him a hard surface to be on if you can.
I'm sure you'll get lots more tips, it's difficult, cos each rabbit responds to different things and cuddles to Daisy B xxx

Poor Daisy ... hes not the only Nethie to have it though, Skye had a problem for a couple of months too. Just like Daisy, it was only on one foot, the skin wasnt broken and you had to move the hair to be able to see it.
As Jay said, its a tricky one, what works for one bun may not work for another. Some people reccomend hard surfaces and others reccomend those foam mats. Others reccomend sudocream, others wont touch it.
Half of the battle is working out what caused it, which is the most irritating thing, because its difficult to know for sure. Your not a bad bunny mummy though!! I think it was the carpet samples i used to cover a shelf and a ramp in Skyes pen. I just lowered the shelf, covered it with thick fleece and removed the ramp. Also put Sudocream on twice a day and it cleared up, came back once or twice over a month or 2 but it hasnt been a problem since.
Hope his sore feetsies heal up soon! Sorry i couldnt be much help, but hes not the only nethie if that makes you feel any better. xxxx

Firstly, Katie - you are not a bad bunny mummy, you are a brilliant mumma
Joey has had this problem a few months back, and the vet advised to put some squishy mats down to give a soft bouncy surface for him. Yoga mats, foam camping mats etc. especially in the places he spends most time.
Hope he feels better soon xx

I read alot about some rabbits that are prown to this, rex mostly, and soft flooring is better for them to prefent this, which I might need to concider with my new babys as they are mini rex crosses.

Do you think Daisy may have a touch of Arthritis Katie?
To be honest Katie I would take Daisy to the vet so they can check him out and rule out anything else like arthritis.
Don't use vet bed for sore hocks as it causes friction. When our Angel had sore hocks vet bed made them worse.

Thistle and Luna were both getting sore hocks...so I got a cotton bath matt for in their pen and they are both fine now. I also used a little bit of sudocrem here and there. I'm sure I read somewhere cotton is good, but I can't remember where..it's just in my head lol! Anyway, don't worry too much, it's not your fault. As Jay said, they can come out of no where...especially if he hasn't had them before you wouldn't think to check! I think in the wild their heels would sort of sink into the grass/earth when hopping but obviously on carpet and rugs that doesn't happen so there's friction (I'm sure I read that somewhere too..probably on here?!)

Re: Sore Hocks how can this happen? UD been to see Mr C
I have spoken to John this morning and he thinks this could be an indication of something else being wrong. I think he is right expecially given there has been something up with him lately that I couldnt quite put my finger on.
Thanks everyone. He has a gentle fleece over the rug at the moment. and im going to get him another one for the living room after work.
Am supposed to be going away this weekend - they know how to time it just right dont they!!

How old is Daisy Katie? Maybe Maysie is on to something with the arthritis. With the changeable weather we have had recently it would be more likely to be causing him pain, making him a bit under the weather and maybe even carry himself slightly differently thus causing the hock probs.

The trick is to put a cover on top of them, otherwise it's nom, nom nom!

Well everything is now covered in (and i have spent a small fortune on) soft new fleeces. He has been all sudocreamed up - which im hoping he doesnt lick off and if he does Im hoping it wont do him any harm.
Thankyou everyone. I guess its just he is always ill with something and I just soooo want him to be well. I try and give him the best of everything and do everything I can for him, and am feeling at the moment that im letting him down as its not enough.

Re: Sore Hocks how can this happen? UD been to see Mr C
I did think while I was out yesterday that it might be arthritis. Won't hear any of this talk of letting him down, OK! These things happen, and having a specialist look at it is not letting him down, it's doing the best you can, ok!
Re: Sore Hocks how can this happen? UD been to see Mr C
Katie, in what way have you ever let Daisy down!!! The whole house runs around him (just as he planned )
You noticed the sore hock because you were checking him over. These things can happen really quickly.
I am sure that the sainted John can sort it.

Re: Sore Hocks how can this happen? UD been to see Mr C
Well Daisy has had a full body xray today, he has a lesion between his 2nd and 3rd vertebrae, it is healing and the little guy will be in pain which is why he is sitting differently and why his hocks are sore.
We have to raise his food bowls from the floor a little and keep the soft fleeces on the floor too. he is not allowed to jump or tackle the stairs, and has to stay calm and rest. Its going to take time and it will always be there in the background. it is likely he will get arthritis in it too.
So he feeling poorly tonight bless him after the GA but is nibbling a little and is very cuddly.
Some gentle TLC for my little man. I love him so much x x
