Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Taking Maggie for her VHD and book her spay. Marleys going for his Myxi too, but i never know if i should take him on his own or with the girls, i have this dilemma every time! I guess if its just Marley the girls will be ok on their own for 30-45minutes. If i was taking one of the girls i think id have to take them all. What do you think?
I want to Maggies teeth checking again, and i want to know what they think about her weight. Also hoping to find out whats happened to these other two Wilton Lane Bunnies. I havent heard anything I dont think im going to be able to take them on now anyway, unless its just until someone else comes to collect them. My health hasnt been very good over the last couple of weeks, i was ill again this morning and the poor buns didnt get seen to until lunch time. I cant take anymore in as i am, its not fair on them.

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Helloo everyone
Marley looked so lost in his carrier on his own, bless him I had to fill it out with fleeces for him! Hes fine now and is flopped out with Dolly.
The vet thinks Maggies weight is fine, she has put a little bit on and doesnt feel quite as boney as she used to, but thats probably just me - wishful thinking? Anyway, shes ok, but certainly doesnt want to be loosing any. Her molars look fine too and shes booked in to be spayed on Friday, so i can be there with her all day and watch her be done. - I know some of you couldnt do this, but it really isnt a bloody procedure, Jane in particular is very neat and tidy

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
I'm glad it all went well!
Nope. I def couldn't watch. I fainted when the vet cut Thumper's tail. I'd probably have died if I'd had to watch them do that to her
Good on you though

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
I love watching ops! Its fascinating, and you really learn a lot, especially when they do PMs. They were in the middle of an emergency c-section when we went in. If i wasnt with my bunny friend (she picked me up as her buns needed vacs too) then id took Marley around the back and watched. Ill never forget the first time i got to help out with one. I had to swing the puppies in the air and rub them to get them going I almost started crying, the vet was laughing at meThumper2001 wrote:I'm glad it all went well!

Quick question for you all.
Do they need to be brought indoors after a spay? I know its cold outside, but if shes brought in for a week she wont be able to go back outside, and mum wont allow her to stay indoors, especially when we have guests coming at the end of Feb and are struggling for space already.
I usually have buns neutered in the warmer weather. Will it be ok if i set a dog crate up in the playhouse, cover it with blankets, give her plenty of fleece and both snugglesafes? Or should she be indoors?

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Thinking how poorly Florence was for about 48hours afterwards I'd say bring her inside if you can. At least you can keep a better eye on her, I had to hand Florence food to make her eat.
Or you could always go out to the playhouse with a couple of heaters and a sleeping bag and camp out with her

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
I'm not 100% sure... but I can tell you that I was told to keep Thumper indoors for the first night.
That was years and years ago so not sure what they advise now. I would prefer to be able to keep a close eye on her for the first 24hrs at least.
Gee. I was really helpful there wasn't I?
Hopefully someone with more useful info will be able to help

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Its fine. I dont feel all that comfortable with the idea of leaving her outside, but im also worried about her going back outside. I have no idea what this weather is doing! One minute the temperature rises the next its below 0. I think we had sleet today too. I dont want her going back outside and being really cold.

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Can you put her in a room in your house that you can make sure isn't too warm? Turn the radiator off and open the window?

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
The conservatory is the coolest place, but the dogs are shut in there on a night. After that is the hallway.Thumper2001 wrote:Can you put her in a room in your house that you can make sure isn't too warm? Turn the radiator off and open the window?
The best place for her to go is on the landing, as only Poppy dog comes upstairs and shes more bothered about jumping into bed with dad on a morning. even if we shut the dogs out of the back room and conservatory, my parents wont allow me to leave a window open.

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
I was told that if it is cold they need to be indoors because bunnies use up a lot of energy trying to keep warm and after surgery they need all their energy to heal. Also you will need to monitor how well she is waking up. The anesthetic will have lowered her blood pressure and respiration that sets her up for hypothermia at a warmer ambient temperature. Also it is more difficult to tell if she would have a temp if she was out in the cold. You would just think she was at a normal temp.
I didn't quite say it as well as the vet, but I think it makes sense.

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Im probably going to bring her indoors in the conservatory/hall/landing until i know shes eating properly. Hopefully she will be ok going back outside in a couple of days. She has plenty in the playhouse to keep her warm. Vet bed, carrier full of straw, a box full of fleeces and she has 2 snuggle safes too. She'll be ok, wont she?gentl wrote:I was told that if it is cold they need to be indoors because bunnies use up a lot of energy trying to keep warm and after surgery they need all their energy to heal. I think you will need to take the straw away in case it scratches her wound.
Ouch!

I meant thats what she has in there at the moment. When she goes back in the playhouse, she will probably still be in the dog crate. I dont want her to hurt herself jumping up onto the shelves.Thumper2001 wrote:I think you will need to take the straw away in case it scratches her wound.

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Glad to hear she's ok
It's going to get to -10 this week Sophia, I would be considering keeping her indoors, in the coolest place you can. They don't loose their winter coat overnight, or in a week, it takes weeks/months to build up and it doesn't shed as soon as they get some warmth.
Later in the week, maybe bring them all in for a couple of nights?

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Ive heard all sorts about the weather, and it hasnt even been below 0 here. There was sleet yesterday and thats about it. The trio have been indoors since before Christmas now, so its not a problem for them, but Maggie cant stay indoors permenantly until the trio go back into the playhouse, but i think she may be settling in to her new life with a husbun by then.Jay wrote:Glad to hear she's ok

Thanks for putting my mind at ease. When i asked a similar question on another forum before, i got jumped on and told that if they come indoors now, they have to stay indoors until March. I didnt know what to do for the best!

Re: Vets appointment at 6pm - Question page 2
Keep her in at least overnight after the spay. if she is eating and healthy, put her back with her friends. She will be fine.
If shes not eating, and you are worried, get her checked again at the vets, and consider bringing her friends in to be with her for a few days.
