Clarabel update - back from the vets Empty Clarabel update - back from the vets

Post by Guest Mon Mar 19, 2012 9:56 am

Well it has all become a bit clearer this morning. I have tried not to molest her too much over the weekend whilst she has been recovering a bit. I have received the goodies from gorgeous guineas this morning and have just slapped some coco-neem melt on the pigs. As per usual you would have thought I was killing them from the squeaks - which allowed me to spot that there seemed to be a lack of teeth in Clarabel's mouth! I had already decided to have her mouth checked today as I didn't think she was drinking properly, but getting a proper look this morning her top incisors have been snapped off at the base. I am a bit surprised as there is nothing to fall off in their hutch so I am not sure how she has done it. So we have a 5.30 appointment to get a proper look in her mouth so we can work out whether it is dental disease or trauma.

oh ****** - on checking out the others whilst bathing them I have noticed Nutmeg's teeth are looking quite uneven and Annie has a lump in front of her genitals. Sad Have spoken to vets again and the appointment has moved back to 6.10 so all three can be examined. Obviously Treacle will come too as it would be rude to leave her behind but she seems fine - apart from being mostly blind obviously.

Well it's good news and bad.

The vet says not to worry about the teeth. Clarabel's will grow back although how they grow back is another issue and Nutmeg's don't need trimming yet. She is as mystified as me about the missing teeth and agrees that they were there on Thursday.

But Annie's prognosis is not as good. The vet has never seen anything like it before - she called in my rabbit vet as well to have a poke and get her opinion. They think it is probably a tumour(s) in the vaginal wall and they feel the area is too delicate for them to try and remove the problem. They say I can hope that it is a polyp and in that case it may pop out and be removable - but they don't think that is the case. Probably the tumour will continue to grow and eventually block her urinary tract and then difficult decisions will have to be made. But at least I know what I am looking for now.

What on earth can Clarabel have done with her teeth???

I have told her that guinea pigs do not have the tooth fairy but I don't think the message has got through. She just has 2 little stumps where her teeth used to be and some dried blood.

I am quite pragmatic when it comes to the piggies. They had such a terrible start to life that I think that any decent life I have been able to give them is a bonus. I know Annie and Clarabel were born at my house but their mum was so ill I am surprised they have not succumbed to something sooner. And when Clarabel had her fall 2 years ago I was convinced I was taking her to be put down then. So I am just glad they are still here, and have always been prepared for the idea they may not have very long lives.
