Having to hand rear :(
Im on the 4th day of hand rearing 3 bunnies 2 from easter and 1 from domino.
It has got to the point where easter was leaving Domino to do all the work, she has become so stressed she has started to take chunks out of the tops of her front legs. Out of 10 bunnies there is 7 left, I took the 3 weakest ones and left domino with 4 and put easter back in with the girls. Domino has stopped taking chunks out (well there is no new wounds) and seems to be happier with the 4 to potter around with.
The 3 Ive took 2 are thriving and one is still quite weak, not taking as much as the other 2, tbh she dont seem to have any interest in the bottle. Ill get some pics on n when possible x

Re: Having to hand rear :(
Bless you for taking all this responsibility. I hope Domino can handle the 4 alright. That was a lot of baby buns for one doe. Poor thing. Sending calming vibes for Domino. And i do hope you can get some rest.

Could you not split each doe and litter into separate quarters? Are you sure Domino was wounding herself and not being wounded by Easter?

Re: Having to hand rear :(
I was watching domino pulling at the top of her shoulder but I thought she was just plucking fur, Easter is doing nothing at all she wasnt letting the babes on her at all and its her kits that have disappeared so Im not sure what to think.
I lost the weakest one this morning, I knew it was coming as she was so small and just wasnt interested where as the other two are suckling fab, and are nice and fat

Re: Having to hand rear :(
Usually they pluck fur out as nesting material and sometimes they will pluck more fur out after having their babies to cover the babies in the nest. If this isn't the case with Domino have you checked her for mites as this could be another reason why she is pulling her fur out, sometimes it can become so itchy with the mites they pluck the fur out and this would be enough for her to not want to feed her babies.

Re: Having to hand rear :(
Yeah the day after she had the kits I took her and easter to the vets as I know domino was a breeding bunny before she came here and wanted to make sure she was ok and wasnt damaged in anyways. Ive had the hutch open for the past few days and she has just been able to pop in and out with it being hot (Ive been in the garden also) and I didnt see her pulling once. In fact she seemed happier. Im taking them all again on wed for him to check them all over again so Ill see what he says..
Also Im feeding the kids morning noon and night is the sufficient or should it be more?? they are taking about 1onz each they are near 2 weeks xx

Re: Having to hand rear :(
We lost the smallest one the other day, I knew we would by the size of it so I have 2 remaining domino is doing well with her kits.
Ive been given a offer of a sort of petting farm taking in 4 of them any sex when they are old enough to be neutered what do you lot recon??

Re: Having to hand rear :(
I reckon you ought to go and look at where they would be kept and make sure the person responsible for them knows what they are doing. It worries me a bit that they say 'any sex' if they think they are going to keep them all together - even with siblings, I would never have more than one boy in a group.4390evans wrote:Ive been given a offer of a sort of petting farm taking in 4 of them any sex when they are old enough to be neutered what do you lot recon??
(I know some people do, and apparently successfully, but in our experience it will end in an isolated, unhappy boy bun if not in a fight)

Re: Having to hand rear :(
I know some disagree with having more than one boy in a group of girls, I have 2 in with mine atm and are quite happy but I think its because there is more girls.
She said she is going to get them done as she only takes in rescues as a rule but because we're friends she will take a few. Its quite nice the bunny area its about the size of a hay barn.
She is only open 6 months out of the year and through the winter the place is closed and only workers are on the site. Im gonna go up and check exactly what she has there Ill get some pics posted when I do x

Re: Having to hand rear :(
I'd also ask her if she is replacing bunnies and if she is, why do they need replacing? What happened to them?
A hay barn sounds nice and large with plenty of binky room and enough room to lessen territoriality issues.
