Viovet posted this on facebook when sharing the binky poster

' Did you know rabbits are the third most common pet in England?
Did you know that rabbit food is VAT free?
'

Then a few posts later

'yes, rabbit food is vat free as sadly not all rabbits are pets.
If you buy 'Rabbit and Guinea pig Food' you'll pay vat.

I wonder if it is tax evasion if you give rabbit food to a guinea pig? Wink
'

So I posted

'But of course you shouldn't give rabbit food to guinea pigs as they have different nutritional needs and rabbit food can make guinea pigs ill.'

and they replied

' ‎'Hay' is digested by both rabbits and g-pigs.
If it is packaged for rabbits then it is vat exempt.
Packaged as guinea pig food and vat must be paid.
'

How bizarre and idiotic are our vat laws and exemptions.

I had always wondered why g.p. food is more expensive than bun food and now I know!

I don't know why but I always thought g.p food was cheaper (not that I ever bought any) but browsing the net now it's true! I had no idea.

It is because some animals (including rabbits) are farmed for food so their foodstuffs would be considered a business expense. I remember this being on a programme about VAT last year.
