At my wits end please help
Milo is recovered now and they (Milo and Ruby) are allowed out again.
Ruby jumps the baby gate so I cant lock her up, when I go to work she eats and plucks my carpet so now is in a cage.
Milo thinks its acceptable to pee in my house.
We've carpet cleaned the carpets and it doesnt make a difference.
I have no idea what to do and am at my wits end.
I dont want to move them outside but dont know what to do.
I love them but they arent my Lily and they arent tidy or clean.
At the moment they are both in the dog crate but that's no life for them either

Re: At my wits end please help
Oh honey, can you get them a pen for when you are not there? Reducing milo's space may help improve his litter habits too.
Daisy had a pen which he used to be in during the day and I put a cheap voile net curtain stretched over the top and safety pinned to prevent escape.

Re: At my wits end please help
Do you have space to give them a pen as well as the dog crate? As long as it is either covered or too tall for her to jump...
Is Ruby ok with the carpets when you are in or are you constantly having to tell her off? We have cheap carpet offcuts under our pen, the latest one is 4' wide x 13' long and was £15.
For toilet training, I'd go back to basics - keep them confined until they are good at using the litter tray then gradually give them more space.
Do you actually have a secure hutch and run set up outside? I wonder if they might actually enjoy some time out when the weather is good. You could put them out when you are out and let them in when you are home?

Re: At my wits end please help
Ruby eats the carpet these days regardless of if we are in or not.
Milo is generally good with the litter training outside the front room but for some reason both of them pee in the living room:'(
I had a lindham baby pen for the hall but that's what Ruby jumps over so I'm at a loss what to do.
I haven't got anything built outside and don't want to do it but don't want my house ruined :'(

Re: At my wits end please help
I'm sorry to hear you are having such a hard time with them Karen
I sympathise with the ruined carpets issue
I echo what everyone else has said about getting them a pen. While I'm out, my two are in a (just short of) 6' x 3.5' pen attached to a Ferplast cage. On the floor of the pen I have a cheap shower curtain (to protect the carpet) with fleeces on top and a mosquito net pegged over the top of it as Molly can jump it
I also agree with locking them up until they get the hang of the litter tray. I know it may seem unfair to them but it will be worth it if it works, which it likely will.
I really hope you can sort them out

Re: At my wits end please help
We have puppy play pens and we put some lino down first and then some cheap off cut mats that we get from the carpet shop and if they wee on the mats it doesn't go through to the carpet. We get our play pens from here

like Katie said you can always peg a cheap net curtain over the top of the pen.

Re: At my wits end please help
Thanks all,
I should add here the strange behaviour.
Ruby on her own while Milo was in the crate with a broken leg: - well behaved no carpet chewing and no toileting in the front room just around milos cage.
Milo out on his own - no toileting around the house on free rein (except the front room) a few round Ruby's cage and at the top of the stairs outside the bathroom ( he's always liked to toilet there), sometimes in the front room
Together.
Ruby toilets in the kitchen by the back door, Milo outside the bathroom door, neither on the stairs or hallway, neither in the dining room, both in the bed by the front door and both in my front room. Ruby now chews carpet too.
I have no idea what the fascination is with the front room, ive carpet cleaned twice and it makes no difference.
Any Bunny behaviour advice her, both have been done x

Re: At my wits end please help
Toileting is often territorial. When you allowed them back together, did you start off in a small space?

Re: At my wits end please help
I reckon it is worth going back to early bonding principles, even if they seem absolutely fine with each other.
It's definitely worth putting some sacrificial flooring under a pen, then keep them confined until they can be clean. Then increase the space gradually if at all possible.
You saying about them toileting around each others separate areas is classic boundary marking. I think that when they are out in the house, they are trying to mark some boundaries there and as soon as one does it, the other has to go and re-mark.
What do you use to clean the carpets? We use a lemon spray which does a very good job of obliterating any other smell.
With Ruby, I would spend hours sitting with a water spray bottle watching her. As soon as she goes for the carpet, a sharp sound like 'uh-uh' (much more abrupt and effective than 'no') and a spray on the body. You'll have to persevere, but she *will* get it. Pretty soon the 'uh-uh' on its own should be enough to stop her, and if you can break the habit it might stay broken
I also wonder if she is quite a bright girl and needs to be kept occupied - she might enjoy some clicker training.
