May I have lots of vibes for Snuffie Please?

Hello friends

Paul took Mr Snuffles to the vet this morning as apart from his legs not working properly, the urinary infection has returned. Obviously I am worried sick.

The vet has given us another course of baytril which can be taken with metacam and his glucoasmine arrived today too.

However, if the urinary infection does not clear up within 10 days and he becomes lethargic and off his food, it will be time to say bye bye. We would do this anyway but at the moment he is eating and drinking very well. The vet’s words were however “He is living on borrowed time.”

I really don’t know how I am going to cope but I know I have all of my friends support. God only knows, we have all been through it at some time. He was bought from a pet shop in 2003 (when I didn’t know any better) and he was £10. The best £10 I have ever spent. He has been through everything with us, a lot of hardship and anxiety and has survived all his companions. Snuffie is special and it is going to be so hard. He has even become the bunny I have always wanted, and he now wants lots of fuss and cuddles. He cuddles right up to me at night. My darlings, could I please have some vibes for Snuffie and I will let you know how he gets on.

The glucoasmine I have bought is a people one so I don’t know what the cat dose is. Would one of you please be a sweetie and let me know what it is?

I'd say spoil him rotten!

I cannot give any advice on glucosamine I'm afraid, but I know someone else will.

For snuffie's size Jo I would be looking to give about 200mg glucosamine per day. I am also wondering whether they would be better using a different anti-biotic. They always plump for baytril as it is the only one licensed for small furries. When one of the piggies was ill I had to fight one vet to give a sheep anti-b that I had been given quite effectively previously. Looking in 'When you rabbit needs special care' I would say that ciprofloxacin would be a better option for a uninary infection. Also have you got him on Pro-C? It could make all the difference.

I agree with Cheryl, I'd ask for a different anti-biotic. Baytril did nothing for me and Jack, but Alamycin (a farm drug) fought off our pasteurella for us - in Jack's case very quickly and with no recurrence.

Thank you my darlings for your kind help and yes Cheryl love, I am very grateful for your advice. I will get him on Pro C if you think it will help.

I don't know if my vet would agree to change the medication to ciprofloxacin - how much of a struggle did you have with your vet? If they didn't agree with me they would just refuse to sell me any but I really want snuffie to get as better and as comfy as possible. I will see if it is on the internet.

I have made a note of all the great advice I have been given and I will keep you informed. It is always great to have such wonderful friends but at times like this it is a real comfort.

Thank you love. He is wrapped up nice and waarm ion a pillow on my bedroom because I gave him a bath this morning. He was all wet underneath and it must have hurt and he just sat there and let the water run over him and on his little tummy. The vet said bathing is fine as long as he is kept warm afterwards. I do think he found it soothing.

Snuffie is having trouble with his little legs earlier today but seems to have perked up a bit. He is still eating and drinking for Enland and as his metacam has now finished, tomorrow he will be on the glucoasmine. I have ordered the heat pad from Pet Planet.

Snuffie may still need Metacam Jo as we had our old girl Grace on the glucoasmine and metacam as well, I think I would ask your vet for advice.

Yes I would use them together. It will do no harm. You may find that Snuffie needs long term metacam for his pain.
