My pair also prefer to eat their hay from the litter tray. Apparently it doesn't taste as good when it hasn't been peed and pooped on.

Mine have a little cat bed, like a house shape, and also a small cat tree with a den in it, and they like to hide in both.

I'm not an exper on litter trays, but we have these

The only problem we've ever had is that M&J got too big to fit in one together so we can't put the "lid" bit on it now. (I know "lid" isn't right but I can't think what it's called ) We get very little mess with these.

The good thing I found with these is, when they're little and the "lid" is on, they had to get in it to eat their hay. I think it really helped us with litter training them in their pen

We have underbed storage boxes for litter trays - some of us nap in them too, so it's better to have something nice and big than to end up buying a bigger one later. The high sides help keep any mess inside as well.

That's very similar to what I've got - they don't pee out of it, and Toffee doesn't kick enough to kick all the litter out.
